Isa shrugged, latching Cliodhna to her breast. The infant sucked greedily, her tiny hands outstretched toward her mother. “Ach, child, just like your father.”

The women shared a good laugh at Doc’s expense. He didn’t seem to mind. In fact, he pressed a kiss to his daughter’s head, ignoring their teasing altogether.

The sentiment made Delphi’s heart lurch. This same sweet gentleness was what she’d seen in Brewer whenever he touched her. It wasn’t a learned ability, but an innate one.All Macha men seem to have it.She cringed. All but one, but I guess Shovelhead isn’t Macha anymore.

Delphi’s phone rang, stealing her away from the room. “Hey, Brewer, what’s up?”

“Where the hell are you?”

She scrunched her face. “Shit, sorry, I forgot to tell you Jupiter and I were visiting Isa and the baby. My prospect is around here somewhere.”

Brewer sighed, but his voice held a sharp tone. “You can’t up and leave like that, Delphi. Not when you’re under Macha’s protection.”

She shifted her weight. “I can’t put my life on hold, Brewer.”

“You don’t know Shovelhead. If he senses anything is fishy, he’ll come after you, daughter or not.”

Delphi’s temper flared, and she tried to tamp it down. She failed miserably. “Stop treating me like a helpless child. He’s my dad, Brewer. He wouldn’t hurt me.”

“Sure, just like he wouldn’t gun down members of his own club.”

Delphi felt three gazes on her, so she quietly walked down the hallway. “What’s got you so on edge?”

“How long have you been gone?”

She glanced at the digital clock on the wall. “I don’t know. An hour maybe. Brewer, what’s going on?”

“Is Doc there?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Okay, good.” She heard his motorcycle start in the background. “Stay put, I’ll be there shortly.”

“Brewer, tell me what happened.” She gripped the phone tighter, worry filling her stomach.

“It’s your restaurant. Someone busted out all the windows. The place is a mess. Glass everywhere.”

She gritted her teeth. “Probably some dumb kids. It’s no big deal.”

“It is. There was a note that said, ‘Stay away from Macha.’”

Her eyes widened, and she suddenly felt out of breath. “Shit.”

“Shovelhead knows you’re hanging with Macha, Delphi, and that’s bad news. If he knows, it also means he’s watching you. Or at least, one of his guys is.”

Delphi found a bench outside Isa’s room and managed to sit before she collapsed, her leg muscles suddenly gelatinous. “Oh my God.”

“Stay in Isa’s room and tell Doc I’ll fill him in when I get there. And for the love of the goddess, don’t try to fix this. Macha has it handled.”

“Evidently not, if Macha let someone destroy my restaurant.” She hung up before he could come up with a response. It didn’t feel good snipping at him, but neither did dealing with an insurance agent she’d no doubt have to call about the windows.

Bending over, she rested her forehead in her hands and closed her eyes tight. Finding out the truth wasn’t supposed to be this messy. But it is. And I have a feeling it’s going to get worse.

CHAPTER31

BREWER

He couldn’t see straight. All he saw was red. At every stoplight and intersection, crimson blurred his vision. It was one thing to come after Macha, but to fuck up Delphi’s bistro was different. It was personal, and he didn’t like it one bit.
