CHAPTER32

DELPHI

The small restaurant was a mess.Glass covered the tables and floors. But it could be worse. Thankfully, no one was hurt. She took a cleansing breath and reminded herself of that twice more before hopping on the back of Brewer’s bike.

Macha sent enough men over to clean up, and after she sent the staff home, Delphi felt comfortable enough to leave. Four prospects would stay at the shop overnight to see if anything else happened. She doubted anything would, as did Brewer.

Brewer didn’t say a word to her. Not on the ride to the clubhouse. Not when they arrived and walked through the halls. And not even when he opened his bedroom door and tossed her backpack on his bed.

Joining her bag, Delphi watched him pace the room. The sun was almost gone, the last streams of its light coming through his window.

“Until Shovelhead is caught, you can’t go off on your own.”

She crossed her legs over each other and pulled out a book. He could save the speech, but he wouldn’t. Cracking open the romance novel Jupiter had recommended, she tried to focus on the words.

“Delphi, I’m serious.”

“Okay, I won’t go anywhere without a bodyguard.” She glanced up and saw the frown beneath his red beard. “Happy now?”

“Not even remotely.”

Returning her gaze to the book, she reread the same page. It didn’t do her any good. Not when Brewer’s eyes were glued to her. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of putting the book down yet.

“Club life can be very difficult.”

“I’ve gathered as much.” She turned a page.

“Particularly for women.”

This got her attention. “Why? Doesn’t Macha revere them?”

“Yes, but other clubs don’t, hence the problem.” He crouched next to the bed, his face a combination of concern and frustration. “MCs we don’t get along with take what’s ours too often, thinking it’ll get us to back down. It never works. In fact, it creates more reason for Macha to get involved.”

“But I’m not yours, Brewer. I’m not anyone’s. I’m the bastard child of a traitorous biker.”

Grabbing the book, Brewer tossed it to the other side of the bed. He gripped her chin in his hand. “Don’t you dare say that. You’re mine, Delphi. I don’t care what anyone else says. I don’t even care who your biological father is.” His gaze softened. “I love you, Delphi, and that means you’re my person. Mine and nobody else’s. I’ll do anything to keep you safe.”

Tears sprang to her eyes, his words hitting a chord deep in her soul. “You… you love me?”

“You think I’d say it if I didn’t mean it?”

She searched his blue eyes, the truth emanating from their gorgeous depths. “No. I don’t think you’d say anything you didn’t mean.”

Brewer moved to the edge of the bed and cupped her face. “I’d only lie to keep you safe, sweet cheeks, and I wouldn’t like doing it either.”

She didn’t realize tears had fallen until he tenderly wiped them away with his thumbs. “I love you too, Brewer. I think I have for a while but was too afraid to admit it.”

A broad smile covered his bearded face. “About damn time you admitted it.”

He kissed her before she could offer a sassy remark. His tongue met hers and she moaned, slipping her arms around his shoulders and drawing him further onto the bed.

“Wait.” She pulled her lips free and sat back. “What about the club and their vendetta against Shovelhead?”

He slid into the spot next to her and pulled her against his chest. “Shovelhead has a lot to account for when it comes to Macha. But if you want him saved, I’ll do everything in my power to make it happen.”

“Even if he killed your parents?”

His features tightened, the decision clearly splitting him in half. “Yeah, Delphi, even then.” He kissed her brow. “They’re gone. Nothing I do is going to bring them back. But you….” He tilted her chin up, his eyes shimmering with love. “You’re right here in my arms and in my bed. I can’t lose you. If it comes down to it, I choose you over revenge every time.”
