It’s a matter of survival.

An hour later, I get a call on my cell phone from Coach.

Here we go.

No doubt he’s already heard what happened today at the tutoring center and I’m not sure how I am going to explain away this one.

“Hey Coach,” I tell him.

“Don’t you fucking start with me,” he says right off the bat. “I got your tutoring report from this morning. You walked out. Walked out?! It’s day one, son! Are you trying to get kicked off the team? Because that’s where you’re heading!”

“No, sir,” I say calmly. “I simply disagreed with the tutor’s strategy and would like to request a different tutor.”

Coach grunts into the phone. “And where do you get off deciding if a tutor’s strategy is good or not? No, this isn’t a restaurant where you get to send back the food you don’t like. You need the best. Lennon is the best. So, your ass will be there again. 9 a.m. tomorrow. Or I will consider you cut. Understood?”

I consider telling him about therealreason I want a new tutor.

But it’s just another excuse he doesn’t want to hear.

So, I’ll suck it up.

I will ignore her as best I can.

I will focus on the work.

I can manage distractions.

It will take everything in me, but I can do it.

“Yes, sir,” I tell him.

And then, I hang up the phone.

I need to blow off some steam.

Tomorrow, I can deal with Lennon.

But tonight?

Tonight, I need a drink.

Chapter Four

LENNON

“I need a fucking drink,” I tell my friend Kellie as we enter the loud, saturated bar.

I am not usually the kind of girl that goes to bars, especially during the week, but after this day, I needed a night out with a good friend. Thankfully, Kellie is always down for fun. She is the kind of friend that you can call for a great last-minute plan, no matter the circumstance.

Dinner? She’s down.

Bar? She’s down.

Random trip to Target to buy all the seasonal candles at 9:30 p.m.? She’s down.

I love that about her.
