“Let’s get Cosmos and pretend that we’re fancy,” she tells me as she leads me through the crowd.

I don’t care what I’m drinking as long as it’s strong.

I keep going over today’s meeting with Rayn in my head on a loop in my brain, wondering if I could have done something differently. Kellie assures me that I did nothing wrong and that I need to drop it.

I’m sure that she is right.

But for whatever reason, I am having a hard time letting it go.

“Two Cosmos please,” Kellie leans across the bar and orders from the bartender as I stare out into the crowd, still mulling.

She pinches my arm and says, “Cut it out.”

I nod. “You’re right. Sorry. I’ll stop. It’ll be easier when I have a couple of drinks in me.”

“Well, we can make that happen,” she says, smiling. “Seriously, don’t worry about it. Sometimes, people are just jerks for no reason. You didn’t do anything wrong. You were just doing your job.”

I roll my shoulders back and then shake them loose. “You’re right.”

Kellie turns back to the bar and scoops up our drinks. She turns back to me and slides mine into my hand.

“Okay, a toast!” she says. “To a really fun, spontaneous night out where we don’t think about anything that is annoying!”

I laugh and click my glass against hers. “Here, here!”

I take a sip and let the cool liquid flow down my throat. Yes, this isexactlywhat I needed. And maybe a boy to flirt with, too.

The last time that I had a boyfriend was in the seventh grade and that relationship was very short-lived. I’ve dated since then, sure, but nothing substantial.

And I’m still a virgin.

I know that it’s weird to be a virgin in college, but I am waiting for someone special, as cliche as that may sound. I am not just going to jump into bed with the first guy who comes along. It has to be right. It has tofeelright.

And so far, it hasn’t.

But for now, I’d like to flirt. I would like to feel attractive.

What’s the harm in that?

“Oh, check out that tall guy by the other end of the bar. Dark hair. Glasses. Thoughts?” I ask Kellie.

Kellie scans the room then lands her eyes on the guy I’m eyeing. She shakes her head. “The guy in the suit? No. Boring. Try again.”

“What’s wrong with boring? I don’t mind boring.”

“Honestly? Your life isalreadypretty boring. You need a little bit of spice—someone kind of dangerous. Maybe someone with tattoos,” she tells me.

I laugh, imagining myself with a guy with tattoos. “No way. That’s not happening. I like boring. Boring is something you can set your watch to. You can depend on boring.”

Kellie grabs my hand. “You’re not even 22 yet. You don’t need to set your watch to anything. It’s okay to let your hair down a little.”

Then, Kellie’s eyes drift away from me.

“Oh, I found him. Danger, danger, right over there,” she says, her eyes lighting up. “Okay, look for the huge monster of a guy that’s posted up over on the back wall. Black shirt. Mugshot for a face. That’s your guy.”

I know it’s him before I see him, but I turn to look anyway.

I follow Kellie’s trail.
