“Oh…” I breathe out, unsure of what to say.

The last person I expected to walk through the door tonight was him.

I kinda want to knee him in the balls, but I also want him to hold me and never let me go. Ever since Wren and I spoke in Louisiana, I’ve been thinking a lot about him and if he’d ever be ready to have a relationship. If my heart would be able to wait for him... but now, here he is. Maybe it’s fate, or maybe I’m an idiot for wanting him in my life again. I just know that seeing him now, despite my heartache, makes me glad he’s here.

As my brain swims in turmoil, I let my eyes admire him for a moment. He looks just as beautiful as the last time I saw him. He’s wearing a tight white T-shirt and dark wash jeans. His hair is tousled, and his cheeks are red. It’s then I notice he’s sweating.

“Did you run here?”

He pushes an awkward hand through his dark tresses. “I did.”

“Liam…”

“Can we sit?” He points to the couch.

“I don’t know if—”

“Please, Birdie girl?” he pleads.

His voice sounds broken. Maybe it’s the way he asks, or maybe it’s Wren’s words, “Not a lot of people can say they found the love of their life at fifteen,” but I agree.

Once we’ve sat down, I feel the heat from his body. His leg is almost touching mine on the small couch and I can smell his musky pine scent.

“What do you want?” I eventually ask.

He sets his hands on his knees and I watch as he digs his fingers into his legs. He’s nervous about whatever he wants to say.

“I saw Wren and Ben tonight. I’m sure you’ve heard the news,” he eventually says.

I can’t help but smile. The image of Wren’s happy face is burned into my mind. “Yes. I’m happy for them.”

He pushes air through his lips. “Yeah, me too.”

“If you’re here because they forced you again—”

“No, Birdie, god no.”

“Then why are you here?” I press.

He leans forward slightly before one of his hands reaches out to tentatively lay on mine. When I don’t pull away immediately he relaxes a bit.

“I came because I realized something.”

His touch sends a familiar shiver up my spine. I try to quell my nervous stomach, but it won’t let me, not with him touching me again and sitting so close.

“And what did you realize?” I ask, becoming impatient.

“That I’m an idiot.”

A small awkward sound bubbles from my lips. “That’s what you came to tell me?”

He runs a hand through his hair. “No, but I—shit, Birdie. I’m not good with words like you. I always think I’m going to say the wrong thing when I’m around you.”

He squeezes the top of my hand and when I look into his chocolate brown eyes, I surrender.

“I’m listening, Liam. Just tell me what you came here to say.Please.” I whisper the last part.

He inhales then exhales slowly out of his nose. Like he’s counting or something.
