I grab my bag and head toward the door. Liam is still trailing me like a puppy. The hallway and outside are already clear so I don’t have to wait for him to do his lookout. Once we’re in the car and on the way back to the hotel, I start to get giddy at the thought of finally hitting the slot machines. I’ve been waiting all day!

“Why are you smiling?” Liam’s gruff voice startles me.

“I forgot you were there,” I laugh. Okay, it sounds more like a giggle. Dang. I might be more drunk than I thought.

He shakes his head. “Good. That means I’m following your rules.”

I snort. An actual snort. Pretty soon I’m laughing so hard I think I might pee my pants. The whole time Liam watches me, a faint smile on his pretty pink lips.

“Why are you laughing so hard?”

I laugh louder. “This whole situation is laughable.”

He rubs his stubbled jaw. “How so?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know,” I giggle.

“You’re something else, Ms. Wilder.”

“I’ve been told.”

Liam raises his eyebrow, but the car comes to a stop in front of the hotel. He buttons his suit coat and makes his way out of the car, then gives me the okay to follow after a minute. Once we’re in the lobby, the sound of slot machines calls to me and I make a beeline right for them.

“Stop!” Liam commands.

I stop like the good dog I am.

I turn on my heel. “Yes?”Is the room spinning?I look up at the ceiling and I think it’s spinning. I should have stopped at four shots. I’m probably going to lose a lot of money tonight.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“I’m going to gamble.”

He shakes his head. “No. You’re not gambling tonight, Ms. Wilder.”

“Whoa there, buddy! You’re not my keeper.”

He comes closer, his voice low to not draw attention. “Trust me, I know I’m not. But I’m your bodyguard, and I’m not equipped or prepared to keep you safe in a full-blown casino at this time of night. It’s not safe, and I’m not putting you or myself at risk so you can blow all your money.”

I giggle again. “That would be a lot of money to spend in one night.”

He bites his tongue, but I can tell he wants to laugh. Or maybe scream.

“I’ll take you back to your room.”

I whine. “But… gambling.”

“It will have to wait for another night. A night when I’m prepared and not falling asleep on my feet. It’s been a long day.”

I push my lips together, trying to quell my irrational anger. I know he’s right, but drunk Birdie is not happy at having her plans foiled.

“You’re so boring.”

“Call me whatever you want. I’m just doing my job.”

“Fine. Take me back oh Boring One.” I stick my tongue out at him like I’m five. “I’ll get my kicks some other way!”

“As long as it’s in your room with the door locked.”
