“Liam. I didn’t expect you to be here.”

“Good morning to you too, Shea.”

She looks me up and down, clearly noting that I’m wearing yesterday's clothes. “Is Birdie awake?”

“Not yet.”

“Did you sleep in here?”

I tap my fingers on the door. “I’m Ms. Wilder’s bodyguard.”

Shea almost rolls her eyes, causing all the alarm bells in my body to go off. There’s something not right with this girl. I start to ask questions in my head like, where did she go to school? How did she get hired? Did she have a history of jealousy?

“Right. Well, can I come in?” She asks.

The voice in my head stops. “What do you need?” I puff out my chest, feeling the need to protect Birdie. I really don’t trust this girl anymore.

“Are you her assistant now?” She scoffs.

Despite her annoyance, I don’t budge. “What do you need, Shea?”

“Hair and makeup will be here in thirty minutes. She has an interview at the local rock station downtown in two hours, then soundcheck after.”

“I’ll make sure she’s ready for them.”

Shea checks me out again, then meets my eyes. Her green ones are cold, and I stop myself from looking away. “Did you sleep on the couch or in her bed?”

“Woah,” I hold up my hands and take a step back. “That’s way out of line, Shea.”

She clicks her tongue against the roof of her mouth. “If you’re looking for beds to keep warm, mine is open.”

I try hard to keep myself from laughing. She’s actually serious. “I’m good, thanks.”

“Right. Well, if Birdie’s bed goes cold, you know where to find me.”

Anger flares inside me. It takes everything in me not to tell this girl off. But she’s Birdie’s assistant, and I’m not going to do that. At least not yet. But I am going to make sure this girl doesn’t even have a parking ticket on her record that I may have missed the first time around.

Instead of saying what I really want to say, I push down my anger. “Goodbye, Shea.”

Liam

Iclosethedooron Shea’s smirking face then lock it.

I’m happy Birdie is still asleep. I wouldn’t have wanted her to hear that insane exchange. She has enough to worry about.

Shaking off the conversation, I make my way to the service phone. When the concierge picks up, I order coffee and pancakes for us before I head back to the bedroom. To my surprise, Birdie is sitting up in bed texting on her phone. Her head snaps up when she hears me enter.

“Liam!” Her voice is squeaky. Like a little kid caught red handed.

I walk over to her side of the bed. “Hey you.”

I pull her to me before she can say anything and mold my lips to hers. She lets out a small moan before returning the kiss. I make sure to taste her and let her feel my tongue against hers as my hand winds in her silken hair. I want Birdie to remember me for the rest of the day. Especially when she’s in Shea’s presence.

When I finally release her, she’s flushed and dazed. “Good morning,” she giggles; and it’s the cutest thing I’ve ever heard. “I thought you left.”

I brush my thumb over her swollen lower lip. “Shea came to the door. I didn’t want to wake you.”
