My stomach twists. “I’ll admit her reaction back there was off, but I did bite her head off.”

Liam shakes his leg a bit. “You said she’s never made arrangements with your mom before?”

“No, never. I’ve always been private regarding my mom. The whole band knows it.”

Liam runs a hand through his hair and hums in acknowledgement.

“What are you thinking?” I ask him.

He sighs. “I checked her background twice and it came up clean. That doesn’t mean she’s not up to something though. Has she ever shown any jealousy toward you or the band? Or have you ever had any issues with her?”

I shake my head. “Never. She’s been the perfect assistant since day one. Everyone loves her.”

Liam leans back on the couch. “I think I’m missing something.”

“Maybe she’s just angry you’re not giving her attention?”

He shakes his head. “I think there’s more.”

“What do we do then?”

“I’m going to see if I can find out anything more about her life before this. She may not have a record, but maybe I can find something. In the meantime, just be careful what you say around her.”

“She’s my assistant, she knows a shit ton about my life.” My stomach sours at the thought. I don’t understand what motive Shea could have for hurting me that way. She’s paid well, gets time off, bonuses… She's never made it seem like she’s unhappy with her work or with me.

“That’s why I think she could have a hand in this.”

I grab hold of my stomach. “I feel sick.”

Liam gently rubs my back. “You’re fine Birdie. No matter what, I’m not going to let anything happen to you. I’ve got your back.”

I lean into him, placing my head on his chest. I let the feel of his muscles and the sound of his heartbeat calm me. He kisses the top of my head and I melt further into him.

“Is this what it feels like to be in a healthy relationship?” I blurt out. Liam’s laughter shakes my body and I move with him.

“I’ve never really had one, so… maybe?”

“What a pair we make.” I shift in his arms and look up into his chocolate eyes. “You’ve really never had a relationship before?” I feel him stiffen and his grip on me tightens. A myriad of emotions cross his face, as if he’s not sure he should say more.

“I had a partner when I was a cop. Her name was Maria.”

Was. Does that mean she’s dead? By the look on Liam’s face, I think I’m right in my assumption. My heart tugs for him, for the pain I see in him.

“You were together?”

He shrugs. “Not really. But she’s the closest I’d had to a relationship. We worked together, ate meals together, but we weren’t… together. It was complicated.”

A pregnant pause fills the room. “You’ve never talked about your time as a cop before,” I say eventually.

“That’s because I hated it. I became a cop out of some weird loyalty to my dad, not because I actually wanted to be a cop.”

“You like private security more?”

He grins at that. “It led me to you, so yes, I like it much more.”

My heart flutters. In a flash I get up on my knees and straddle him. His face goes from sadness to arousal in a second flat.

I rub my nose against his. “You make me hot when you say things like that.” His hands wander down my back, quickly finding my ass. His erection begins to grow under me and arousal pools low in my belly.
