The sparkling light grew so bright it encompassed everything it touched, taking over Darius’ sight completely. He could see nothing but light.

Then, as quickly as it grew, it vanished. When Darius was able to see again, he noticed that only Eva laid in front of him. Her mother was gone.

Panic nearly swallowed him whole when he realized Eva was still as burnt as before. But before it did, he spotted movement in her chest. The movement was slight, but it was enough for him.

Eva was breathing, which meant she was very much alive. His worst nightmare was over.

Chapter Fifty-Five

Darius Fischer

It had been two days since Darius held Eva’s dead body in his hands. Two agonizing days waiting for her to wake up as her body slowly healed itself.

Darius brought Eva to their room the second after she exhibited signs of life by breathing.

While Hella’s body had been immediately burned to ashes, Artem remained alive. Kelly was able to conjure up enough magic to keep him in a perpetual state of excruciating pain. She didn’t have to be present for the magic to work. She decided she wanted him to experience the karma he deserved, so she locked him away and threw away the key. Wherever he was, Darius had no doubt he was still screaming.

Over the last two days Darius refused to leave Eva’s bedside. It didn’t matter how much everyone tried convincing him to get fresh air, he wouldn’t listen. He refused to leave her side until he was absolutely sure she was okay. Though her body had been healing over the last two days, she continued to sleep. He needed her to wake up and tell him she was okay before he was completely convinced.

He was optimistic and believed she would wake up soon given how much she had already healed. Small burn wounds were now scattered around her body, most of her skin having healed entirely. Her hair grew back fully, somehow thicker and longer than it was before.

Others often came in to check on Eva. He couldn’t wait until she woke up so he could tell her how many people cared about her here. You’ll never be alone again.

But he couldn’t get past a creeping fear that she may never wake up, unable to ever see how much love she was receiving. They love you, Eva.He wished he could tell her already!

“How are you holding up?” Gedeon walked into the room, taking a seat beside him.

“I’ve been better.” Darius had beena lotbetter. He had also been worse.A lotworse. At least there was hope for Eva now. The worst he felt in his life was when he believed there was no hope for her. He didn’t want to experience that feeling again.

“I’ve certainly seen you better.” Gedeon was scratching at his pants, his attention focused on his thighs. Over the course of the last two days Darius noticed that Gedeon didn’t look Eva’s way. Not once. He was constantly diverting his attention, looking anywhere else. It was as if he was too ashamed to look at her. “She’ll wake up.”

Darius gave Gedeon a scrutinizing look, trying to decipher what was bothering him so much. “Why are you in this room if you refuse to look at her?” Darius asked in an interrogating manner. He didn’t like the way Gedeon had been acting around Eva. It was entirely too suspicious. “I’m going to assume you came in here for me, not her. So, tell me what it is that you want to talk about.”

Gedeon let out an extended breath of air. “I’m trying to prepared myself.”

“Prepare yourself for what?”

Eyes still on his pants, Gedeon said, “To leave.”

“I don’t understand what you’re saying,” Darius admitted. He felt like his friend was talking in riddles.

“You’re right. I came here to talk to you, not to check on her. I’m scared shitless to say anything because I know once I do, I’ll have to leave this place. And honestly? I like it here. It’s the first place I’ve felt welcomed in… well, ever.”

Darius understood the feeling because it was mutual. Honestly, he didn’t want his friend to leave. They had been by each other’s sides for centuries. Unfortunately, somethings weren’t forgivable, and Darius had a strong feeling Gedeon was about to admit something terrible.

“Go on,” Darius urged him to continue in a no bullshit tone, fearing what Gedeon was going to say.

Gedeon stopped scratching his thighs. “Do you remember Eva’s vision?”

Darius nodded. He suspected the conversation would go in this direction. Gripping Eva’s hand for comfort, he told his friend, “I’m going to assume you ended up becoming Artem’s most loyal warrior, as she predicted.” Darius now knew everything Eva sawdidbecome reality.“You led Hella and Artem here, didn’t you?” He wasn’t entirely sure why he asked when he already knew the answer. Perhaps he was holding onto hope that he and Gedeon could remain friends.

Gedeon swallowed. “I did.”

Darius shut his eyes, unable to look at Gedeon any longer. Trying to remain calm, he convinced himself that he expected to hear this. Still, hearing that his closest friend knowingly put this woman, the woman he realized heloved, in danger was almost too much to handle. If it wasn’t for Gedeon, she wouldn’t have burned.

Refusing to make a scene in front of Eva, he told Gedeon in the calmest manner possible, “I believe you should go.” It was difficult to keep his voice low, but he didn’t want to prematurely wake up Eva. She was still healing. “Far from here.”

“Understood,” Gedeon stood up. “I thought it was right… letting you know.”
