“You know I didn’t tell Artem everything the other day.” She let out another yawn, rubbing a knuckle against her eye. Not entirely understanding what she meant, Darius gave her a questioning look. “When I told him what I saw in my vision with Gedeon. I didn’t tell him the complete truth.”

“Why?” He sat upright. “You lied to Artem?” She should have been smarter than that. Artem could’ve picked up on her lie. The consequences wouldn’t have been worth it.

“Mhmm,” she nodded, her hair rubbing against her seat.

He shook his head, placing a firm hand on her arm. She looked down to his hand quizzically, as if not understanding why he was reacting this way. “You shouldn’t have done that.”

She pursed her lips together before ripping her arm free from his hold. “I can do whatever the fuck I want,” she told him, lifting her head up.

“Not if it’s going to put you in danger.”

“Says who?”

“Saysme.”She was lucky to have gotten away with what she did. But what if she decided to do something that stupid again, ultimately putting her life on the line? No. He wouldn’t allow it. “Lying to Artem could’ve gotten you killed.”

She rolled her eyes. “I didn’t lie. I omitted information. Big difference.”

She had to be kidding. “There’s no difference at all.”

“To each his own,” she turned away from him, looking out the darkened window. “Whether I lied to him or not wouldn’t have mattered. He had no idea I was fibbing, and Istillalmost died.”

She wasn’t getting his point. “That doesn’t matter. What matters is that you acted recklessly. If you go around acting rashly, you’ll get yourself killed.”

“Good thing I’ll have you around to save my ass.” She looked back, shooting him a cunning smile. “You didn’t even know why I did it.”

That was true. He had absolutely no idea. Maybe she had a reason to lie to Artem other than to simply piss him off. He had to admit, she was exceptionally skilled at pissing him off. “Enlighten me.”

She scrunched her eyes together, as if deep in thought, before relaxing her features and saying, “Nah, I don’t feel like it.”

Gods, this girl was infuriating.

Running a hand through his hair he said, “If you had a reason, tell me.” Now he was curious. Now he needed to know.

He wasn’t sure if he wanted to know because of plain old curiosity, or because it would give him a deeper glimpse into how her mind worked. He’d take glimpses of the inner workings of her mind every chance he had.

“Ask nicely and I might.” She was playing with him. No surprise there.

Clenching his fists together he groaned, “Please.”

She playfully grinned. “I suppose that’ll do.”

It better fucking do.

She coughed into her hand before speaking.“In my vision I didn’t just see Gedeon being faithful to Artem. I saw Artem seriously pissed off because you betrayed him. If I told him the entire truth you wouldn’t have walked out of that room alive.”

She was right. He wouldn’t have. She saved his life by lying to Artem, taking the risk despite knowing how dangerous it was to do so. Hearing her say this was encouraging. He believed she was throwing him under the bus when she told Artem about Gedeon, when in fact she was helping him. Maybe she didn’t hate him. If she didn’t, that meant he might have a better chance with her than he assumed a few minutes ago.

It’s possible.

His newfound hope for his future with her didn’t change the fact that she shouldn’t have lied to Artem. Especially not for him. His concern for her safety winning over, he said, “Don’t do that again.”

She backed up where she sat. “Jeez, a quickthank youwould’ve been nice.”

She really didn’t understand, did she? She needed tonotact so careless. “I appreciate what you did. I really do.” He absolutely meant what he said. “But you shouldn’t have done it. In the future, if it comes between your life or mine choose you. Always.”

She tapped a soft finger to her lips. “Eh, I’ll think about it.” Despite her uncaring comment, he noticed a spark light in her eyes. What he said touched her deeply.

Regardless, she needed to listen to what he was saying. “I’m serious, Eva.”
