And Darius was too far from them both. He wouldn’t be able to reach Hella in time to stop her from setting his sister on fire.

Despair set in when he realized how unsettling this situation was. Karina was going to die in front of him, and there was nothing he could do.

“No!”He screamed, desperately jolting forward as if he’d miraculously be able to stop Hella in time.

And then, an actual miracle happened.

Darius was so focused on Karina’s vulnerable position in front of Hella that he didn’t think to look behind the sorceress.

A figure from behind Hella broke into view, slicing a sword straight through her throat, beheading her and rendering her dead in an instant.

The figure standing over Hella’s body looked up at Darius, a proud smile lighting his features. “I’d say I just bested the Voivod’s most skilled swordsman, wouldn’t you?”

“Gedeon.”

Chapter Fifty-Four

Darius Fischer

Darius smiled at his sister, the woman who just saved his life, relief washing over him. She was still alive.Thank the gods.

Admittedly, if he had taken the time to train her in the past, she probably wouldn’t have come so close to death. He never thought she was capable enough to learn how to wield a weapon. Tonight, he realized he never should have held her back from her potential. If Gedeon didn’t show up just on time, she’d be dead.

Darius probed Gedeon, recalling Eva’s last prediction. According to Eva, Gedeon was going to be Artem’s most loyal warrior. Considering Gedeon went behind Artem’s back today, his days of being Artem’s best warrior were probably over. Which meant Eva’s prediction already came to pass.

What did Gedeon do to be considered Artem’s most loyal warrior? “We need to talk,” Darius told his friend.

“I know.” Gedeon looked down to Karina. “I’m surprised you let Karina fight,” Gedeon commented as he reached a hand out to her. She grabbed it, jumping to her feet.

“She’ll need training.”

Karina’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Really? You’ll train me?”

Darius nodded. He was thrilled to see her, not only alive, but happy. Though now that the relief of seeing her alive had passed, another vital worry pounded against the forefront of his mind.

Eva,he thought, beginning to search the overgrown grass for her, sprinting in her direction when he located her body on the ground.

Behind him he faintly heard Kelly call out to everyone, “As much as I’m enjoying my little talk with Artem, does anyone want to lend me a hand?” Artem’s screams were still unceasing, though Darius was growing accustomed to the sound.

When Darius reached Eva, he collapsed onto his knees at her side. “Eva,”he breathed, his eyes sweeping her body, looking for a sign of life.Anysign of life. “Come on, Eva. Give me something!” He desperately pleaded.

Her clothes had been burned so badly they were no longer visible, revealing her bare body - every inch of it scalded. He couldn’t find a single patch of skin that wasn’t torched.

Immortals were capable of surviving terrible wounds. But this? This went far beyond terrible. She was unrecognizable.

Tears welled in his eyes, blurring in his vision. Unable to accept that she was dead, he picked her up, cradling her in his arms. “I’m so sorry, Eva. I was too late, and I’m so sorry.” He wasn’t able to give her the memories she asked him for, the memories she wanted to see when her life flashed before her eyes.

Eva was right all along, and she tried so hard to make him see it. Her visions always came true. He didn’t believe it, his falsified hope preventing him from being with her until it was too late.

“Is that…” His sister stood somewhere behind him, her voice drifting off as if grief took away her ability to speak. He didn’t pay her any mind. He couldn’t. Not when Eva was in his arms like this.

Darius cupped Eva’s cheek, looking into the eyes he loved so much. Her lively eyes were always exuding both confidence and warmth. Now they were lifeless. There was no trace of the woman he knew in them.

Eva was gone.

He pressed her body against his, rocking back and forth as his tears began to spill down his face and onto her. The pain she must have experienced before she died… her final screams would haunt him for the rest of his eternal life.

She didn’t deserve this.
