How could he possibly go on without her? Somehow, he needed to manage, if not for himself but for his sister.I’ll be a walking corpse…

He howled into the night. He was suffocating, unable to accept the gruesome reality he held in his hands.

My worst nightmare, now a reality.

Then, an incredibly calming voice spoke from somewhere in the forest. “Will you allow me to help?” He could hear the shifting of bushes as a woman approached, her voice both unfamiliar and familiar.

“Help?” Darius croaked, forcing himself to look away from Eva and up to the approaching woman.

She was beautiful, her face heart shaped, auburn curls wildly cascading around it. In fact, she resembled someone he loved very much.

She looked just like Eva.

“Who are you?” He asked her exactly what was running through his mind.

“Someone who was not able to help before but can help today.”

“You look… you look just like her.”

“Every mother hopes to look like their child, do they not?” She stood over Darius, stretching her arms out to him, silently asking him to hand Eva over. When Darius hesitated, she let him know, “I can’t do any more harm than what has already been done.”

“You’re her mother,” he exhaled, amazed.

The woman smiled, her smile somehow able to warm his heart amidst all this darkness. “And I’m hoping you’ll allow me to help my daughter.”

“You… you were never there for her. You left her alone in the world.” He felt a strong need to protect Eva. Despite his words, he found himself handing Eva over to her.

In Eva’s condition, it would be impossible for anyone to bring more harm to her. She was not only dead, but unrecognizable. Her mother couldn’t make this moment any worse if she wanted to.

Perhaps she could make it better.

Though, after ignoring her all these centuries, Darius didn’t have any idea why this woman would want to help her now.

Darius’ heart twisted when the woman took Eva from his hands. “My name is Tris. Tris Maas,” she explained, pushing back what was left of Eva’s hair. She looked at Eva as if she had never loved anything so much in her life, which went against everything Eva believed. “I was cursed by Hella before Eva was born.” As if chanting something she had recited countless times over the course of her life, Tris began whispering, “You may never aid your daughter, and you may never show her compassion, not for as long as she lives.” She looked up to Darius. “But now Eva is dead, the curse broken.”

Darius looked at her questioningly, not understanding what she was saying. The questions lining up in his head were infinite. But right now, only one thing mattered. “Can you help her?”

She nodded. “Sorceresses may be weak, but our powers are strong. Perhaps if we learned to get along we would be unstoppable. Sadly, we’re a cruel and terrible species.” She smiled down to Eva. “But my daughter isn’t, is she?” She spoke as if she already knew the answer, brimming with pride for her daughter.

“Eva is a wild and fascinating woman. She is not cruel.” She could never be cruel.

“Thank you for watching over her when no one else could,” she said as a low, white light began emanating from her hand.

“I didn’t exactly watch over her. I, um…” He stammered, not exactly sure how or if he should let her know what he did to Eva when they first met.

“There’s no need to explain. I was watching the entire time. I can conjure up scenes of current events from anywhere in the world, so I spent my days watching her. It’s one of my three powers, teleportation being another.” She winked at Darius, knowing she just explained how she was able to get to them so quickly.

She gently laid Eva on the ground between them, positioning herself so she was kneeling across from Darius. “How can you help?” He asked.

“A sorceress’ greatest gift is the ability to give a life for a life, just as a witch once gave her life for all of ours centuries ago.” She placed her hand over Eva’s heart, the white light stemming from it shining brighter. “She’s going to have my powers after this, so do me a favor and make sure she doesn’t use my powers for the wrong reasons. I’m tired of sorceresses doing that.”

Darius nodded, “I will, I promise.”

This woman really was going to save Eva. As the light grew brighter, so did the hope in his heart.

“Oh, one more thing. I would have been there for her if I could have been. Please let her know I always loved her.”

“Of course.”
