I clench my fingers, digging my nails into the palms of my hands. It’s pointless arguing with her. She will never see beyond her own selfishness.

“Come on, Ms. Broderik. There’s no time to waste. Take this cup to the bathroom. I’ll do everything else.” The woman hands me a clear cup. “Try not to spill.”

It just makes me want to pee all over the fucking place to spite her. If only my modesty didn’t put me in check.

“And leave the door open, honey. I don’t trust you.” Mom motions to the small bathroom.

I peek into the disgusting bathroom, crinkling my nose. I couldn’t even escape if I wanted to. There are bars over the tiny window. I spin and glower at her, holding the door half open in case she tries to charge me.

“Fuck off, Mom. I will close this damn door if I want to.” I slam it shut and try to twist the lock, but it doesn’t click into place. I push a rolling cart with toilet paper in front of the door, blocking it, but somebody could probably just bust it open.

My bra buzzes, the vibration startling me. I was too distracted by everything that I didn’t notice that the phone stayed in place. At least my boobs come in handy for something else besides looking good in a low-cut shirt or turning my alphas on before they turn into milk makers.

Adrian: Call me.

I know Adrian asks because he can’t be certain that I still have the phone otherwise.

I hit his contact, listening to it only ring once before someone breathes on the other line. I clear my throat, doing my best to whisper without my voice shaking.

“It’s me,” I say, afraid that Adrian can’t hear me. “I’m scared.”

A little growl sounds through the line, Adrian’s worry reverberating through my bones. “We have you located. I need you to hang tight. There was a shooting nearby, and one of our police escorts was attacked by a gang.”

Tears burn my eyes, and I squeeze them, releasing a breath.

The door rattles on its hinges. “Scarlett! Hurry up! You can’t take that long to fill up a cup.”

I grip the phone harder. “Please hurry. Chaz choked me out. I don’t trust him. He’s working with Pack Fernando. They want me to turn against you. They want me to say that I want them.”

“I need you to hang on, Scarlett. Do not do anything that will get you hurt. I know you’re scared, but you’re tough. You are a part of Pack Hart. These criminals won’t get away with it.” Adrian releases a little breath. “Now, keep me on the line. I’m here for you. We all are.”

“Scarlett!” Mom screams, banging her fist on the door.

I startle and sit down on the toilet. “Give me one fucking minute!” I scream back, tucking the phone away again without hanging up with Adrian.

I do what I’m asked and force myself to move the cart out of the way to join my mom back in the disgusting bedroom. The woman in scrubs takes the cup from me, her gloved hand shaking. I know she’s complying because she’s been coerced into this. I still hate her, though. I hate my mom even more.

“Go sit down on the bed. You’re not going anywhere.” Mom points at the sheetless mattress with a throw blanket hanging off the edge.

I cross my arms and remain standing in my place, staring at the pregnancy test the woman dips into the cup. She sets it down flat on a tray, setting a timer. My heart pounds, my whole body going haywire at the thought. I’m terrified to find out the results. If I had taken the test yesterday, I’d be over the moon excited if it were positive. But now? I’m terrified. What if I am? What if Chaz and his new pack get away with this?

The bedroom door flings open, smacking against the wall. Chaz sneers, whipping his gaze at me, and I catch sight of two familiar guys standing a couple of feet away. They were the assholes that ruined my birthday. They were the same ones that were on the football team and threatened to ruin Leo’s reputation.

“Well?” Chaz asks, baring his teeth.

The nurse releases a small whimper under her breath. “It’s p-positive. Congratulations, Pack Broderik.”

“My beautiful daughter. Pack Carlisle will be thrilled with the news. Following in my footsteps. This is amazing.” Mom wraps her arms around me, her demeanor changing.

I get whiplash with the ups and downs of her attitude. But worse, I feel as if I will die at any second. I’m pregnant. I shouldn’t be shocked. I knew that the possibility was high. It’s what I wanted with Adrian, Ezra, Leo, Dominic, and Jonah. It’s what we all wanted. A family.

But now? One look at Chaz proves that my entire life and future are in jeopardy.

He strides closer to me and grabs me by the neck, swinging me toward the wall. Bowing forward, he growls in my face. “You’re excused, Nurse Cindy.”

The nurse grabs her things and rushes out, pushing past the two alphas in the hallway.

I shrink back, testing the strength of Chaz’s hand. “Please, you’re hurting me.”
