“Maybe you should’ve thought about that before ruining my entire life. I had everything I could ever want, and I would have inherited a position of power with my uncle, but you just had to be such a bitch.” Chaz growls, his voice vibrating across my mouth. “You have a lot of making up to do. First, I want to start with the bastard. You will fix this, or I will do what it takes to ensure that the Hart bloodline ends before it can begin.”

Mom gasps. “Chaz, it was not in our agreement. You said that you wouldn’t care. That baby—”

Swinging his arm, Chaz backhands my mom, sending her sprawling across the floor. She releases a cry and scrambles away, cowering in the corner.

“It isn’t mine. It’ll never be mine.” Chaz snaps his teeth in my face, his eyes dark, lifeless almost. “But if you do as you’re told, I will allow the Harts to pay off all of my debts. They won’t have it, but at least it will exist.”

My insides freeze at his psychotic words. He has no right to put me in this position. He has no right to try to control not only my life but my body.

His fingers tighten around my neck, and I gasp, trying to suck in air that doesn’t come. I’m afraid he will knock me out again. I can’t trust what he will do if I can’t defend myself. And my mom is now a coward, hiding in the corner as if she’s the victim in all of this. She probably blames me.

“Will you do as you’re told?” Chaz asks, releasing his thumb enough to let me breathe.

I release a gargled cry, nodding my head. My mind whirls with a dozen thoughts. The edges of my vision shadow. I’m terrified of what’s to come. I know my guys said they would get to me, but when? Can I hang on that long?

I don’t want to find out.

“Good.” Chaz motions to the bed. “Now go sit down. I have some business to take care of with your mother.”

He takes a step back, giving me the space I need. Without thinking, I jerk my leg up as hard as I can, kneeing him in the balls. I throw myself forward with all my weight, landing on top of him.

Chaz grabs the fabric of my slip, tearing it. “Chris! Nick! Get your asses—”

I punch him in the face.

I don’t stop.

I won’t. If it’s him or me, I choose me.

I will make him pay.

“Don’ttouchher!”Momyells, swinging a chair hard enough to knock Chris into the other alpha, Nick. She screams and grabs a lamp next, using it like a bat.

Chaz digs his nails into my legs, scratching my skin. Blood trickles over the wounds as he tries to fight me off.

Throwing himself upward, he latches his fingers into my hair and flips me over his head. I land with a gasp on my back. Pain explodes through my scalp, his fingers tangled and refusing to let me go. He drags me a couple of feet, the carpet burning my skin.

“Damn it, Scarlett! I could’ve made you happy had you just given me a chance.” Chaz rips me off the ground and slams my back into the wall.

The world blurs, starbursts peppering my vision. Mom screams out in a way I’ve never heard. Chaz doesn’t give me the chance to catch a glimpse of her. He tosses me on his shoulder, the sudden gesture knocking my phone free. It thuds against the floor, feeling as if it takes my heart with it.

“Fucking shit! We have to move. Now!” Chaz spins, pointing at Chris and Nick. “The bitch has a phone. Rip was supposed to search her. The fucker!” Roaring, Chaz punches the wall, leaving a crater.

Mom screeches, throwing a book near Chaz’s head. “Stop! You haven’t paid—”

Swiveling around, Chaz growls and knocks my mom away, sending her into the bed. Chris and Nick run forward, and Chaz stomps his boot into the phone, smashing it. I cry out, my panic seizing my muscles. If we leave this house, it’ll be over. My alphas won’t be able to track me. Who knows what will happen next.

“No!” I scream, throwing my weight.Don’t make it easy. Don’t submit. Don’t take shit from anyone. My mind snaps at me, repeating the anthem over and over.

Flailing, I thrash, kicking and hitting. I bite Chaz’s shoulder and then his hand as he tries to get his fingers around my neck.

Sirens blare from somewhere in the distance. The muffled ringing tenses Chaz’s muscles.
