I clutch the fire whip tighter. “People did not get hurt because of me. They got hurt because of you and because of your fucking army. Don’t you dare try to shift the blame to me.”

Cassius scrunches his nose. “Had you just—”

Snapping his mouth shut, Cassius jerks around to see Lucian rounding the corner. I use his distraction against him and rush forward, lashing the fire chain at the same time as I close the distance. He doesn’t even get the chance to block me. The fire chain slashes across one of his wings, and he hollers in pain.

Lucian doesn’t even have to close the space to restrain him. Jumping on his back, I knock Cassius to the pavement and shove my hands between his shoulders, pinning him down. My hands sting as they touch his feathers, and he automatically uses his heavenly power to make them disappear.

He freezes. “Raven, get off me. I don’t want to hurt you.”

Darkness rises through me, and it feels as if I lose complete control of my body.

There’s no way I will let Cassius hurt me. I don’t even give him the chance to try because I take the chain and wind it once around his neck, making him holler again.

“I'm done waiting for you to see reason, you fucker,” I say, tightening the chain even more. “It’s time for you to claim your throne.”

A bright flash of heavenly light bursts through the air, and Lucian roars. My whole body lights up, starting from my belly and working its way outward until it breaks the strange shadows of the realm, sending us back to the mortal plane.

I fall away from Cassius, only to be dragged back by Lucian. Hopping to his feet, Cassius catches his neck and jerks around, looking from my face and down to my stomach.

“Oh, Heaven. I have been blessed.” Cassius steps forward a foot as if he’s entranced by the bright glow. “Elias, you have done the Higher Power’s good work helping me. You will get what you’ve always desired. I promise.”

Shock leaves me speechless as he speaks to my stomach as if Elias can hear him. I don’t even get a chance to react before Lucian lifts me up, his skin burning from touching me, but he doesn’t let go.

Cassius smiles, the gesture creepier than I expect it to be. And then he disappears.

So does my light.

I allow Lucian’s darkness to consume me.

Chapter 9

RAVEN

Angel Baby

“YOU’RE LUCKY I can’t get to your annoying ass, Elias. Because all I want to do is remind you of your fucking place. You can’t be pulling that angelic shit. You are on team Hell.” Lucian points at my stomach, glaring as if he can see Elias.

It weirds me out, so I swing my hand and smack him upside the head. Lucian snatches my wrist and pulls me closer, touching his palm to my stomach. This time, the otherworldly light doesn’t burst free. He doesn’t get burned like he did before.

“That’s better, dipshit,” he mutters, tightening his jaw. “Though I did enjoy how you gave Cassius hope. I can’t wait to fucking steal it away from him. We can use this.”

I comb my fingers through my hair and pull it out of my face. I don’t know how much longer I can take having Lucian have a conversation with my stomach as if Elias can respond.

“That’s enough. Can you talk to me and not my stomach? I want you to tell me what the hell happened and what Cassius thinks.” I shuffle back and get him to remove his hand from my middle.

“He obviously thinks the fact you were radiating heavenly light might change things.” Lucian rubs his hand over his head.

“Yeah, it could be a bit inconvenient if we suddenly can’t touch you comfortably.” Dante’s voice comes from the doorway of the hotel suite.

Opening his arms, Dante silently asks me to go to him. I rush from Lucian and close the space to Dante and let him engulf me in his arms.

“You took forever.”

“Well, since we can’t use you as bait, it takes a bit of time to set the angel traps. But they’re done now.” Dante pulls me up higher until our lips meet. Kissing me softly, he savors my mouth for a moment. “Plus, we had to also find you an obstetrician. Kase is getting things set up now.”

“Why do you guys have to go and make shit so real?” I ask, scrunching my nose. “Like, are you bringing someone in? Do I get to pick? Is it one of your contracted souls?” A million questions run through my mind. I don’t know how I would feel if it was one of their contracted souls. A lot of them are really fucking awful, and I kind of don’t want someone like that near my vagina. I mean, sure, they are the devils, but they are not anywhere near as horrible as some of the mortal souls. They just are here for balance and punishment for others' wrongdoings.

“Fuck no. We are getting you the best of the best. No deals involved.” Dante sets me on my feet, but he doesn’t let me go. “And you’re not just getting one doctor. You’re going to have a team. You can fire anyone if you are uncomfortable with them.”
