“Hell is no longer yours. It belongs to those who sacrifice their beings in the name of Heaven.” The angel once again manages to summon heavenly light and prepares to blast it at Micah.

Lucian whips his fire chain around the angel and drags him to him. He uses his nails and slices across the angel’s throat, severing his head from his body. It won’t stop the angel for long, because Hell will just reset him to experience the torture over again, but it will slow him down enough.

“Get Raven out now!” Lucian says as another angel rips itself from the pits and tries to crawl through the crack in the floor.

I rush toward Dante, and he wraps his arms around me and Raven and drags us toward the arched doorway leading to the open air of Hell. Cassius follows behind us, and usually, I’d try to fight him, but he brandishes his heavenly sword and stabs a flying demon through the chest. I didn’t even see the fucker coming. It seems as if those who have jumped from Heaven have decided to try to take over Hell instead of bowing to the kingdoms, and this demon isn’t one we’ve created. It is a former angel.

Unholy fucking shit.

We would never give a fucking angel a ranking position among our army. Only the souls that come straight from their cycle to join us are offered such luxury. We don’t trust angels. And if they fall, they fall as Elias had done. They wouldn’t just come to Hell. They would join the mortal world and all that business.

“Fuck, they are releasing all of our captives.” Dante soars high above Zade’s kingdom, and I glanced down at the aisles of burning tombs containing the souls of sloth. I have no idea what’s inside those tombs, but I don’t really want to know. I’m sure the fucking bastard figured something twisted to punish those who have fallen to Hell in his kingdom.

“Cassius, if you were going to remain by our side, you need to fight. I need you to clear a fucking path.” I swing my arm and shoot another wave of ruby power at a demon that launches from on top of one of the tombs. His wings are too far gone to carry him, but it doesn’t mean that they won’t grow back with his missing limb. It’s as if someone cut the chain that kept him at the bottom of the pits.

“Your Almighty Grace, please give us the strength—” Cassius growls as I cut off his prayer with a burst of my power.

“That shit doesn’t belong in Hell just as these fucking angelic bastards don’t either. Did you know about this?” I ask, using my tail to whip at another mutated angel.

Cassius swings around and slices his heavenly sword through the demon, cutting him in half. He quickly severs his wings as well, and the limbs fall back to the fiery ground.

“I would’ve never allowed such an act against Heaven.” Cassius flies ahead and stabs his sword through the neck of another mutated flying angel. I struggle to think of them as demonic, despite them being so. They haven’t earned the title.

“Why do they even try? You guys are far too powerful to be overthrown.” Raven speaks up for the first time, her voice echoing as she shouts over the wind. “I don’t understand.”

“I will explain everything when I can concentrate, angel-girl,” I say, kissing the nape of her neck and holding onto her tightly. I shift my tail to wrap around Dante’s waist to tie us to him, allowing him to free his hands to fight properly.

There are at least ten more bastards launching from the ground. One of the assholes throws another, trying to knock us from the sky. Cassius rams into the traitor of Heaven and manages to hack him up so quickly that I nearly miss his scattered remains falling away.

“I don’t know this place. Where are we going?” Cassius asks, shooting his heavenly light in a semi-circle, clearing another path. The demonic angels can’t crawl from the pits fast enough to keep up with us. They are weak in their new states. They haven’t been tied to any one kingdom, and it shows.

“Head toward that towering mountain over there. The one made from fire and bones. That is the border of my kingdom. Once we cross it, we can use a portal. I don’t want anyone to follow us, so hustle your fucking ass.” Dante stays right on Cassius’s back, using him to shield both me and Raven from any threats. I never thought I’d appreciate being in a half-angel, half-devil sandwich with Raven, but I worry that she could get hurt in the middle of this battle. We don’t know how much she can handle, and I don’t want her to be tested anyways.

“I swear if I lose my wings, I will be worse than my brother ever was.” Cassius mutters under his breath, though he doesn’t shift into a devil like he expects. He hasn’t turned his back yet, and unfortunately for us, I’m not sure exactly how or when that will happen. Right now, we need heavenly power.

“If you were going to lose your fucking wings by helping us, you would already be in the fucking pits,” I say, poking my finger against his wing and burning the skin.

He growls and swivels, glowering at me. “Things have changed. I don’t even know what I’m doing anymore. All I know is I serve Heaven.”

“Apparently, those fuckers think they do too.” Raven tightens her fingers around my arms as if she’s afraid that something will rip us apart.

We manage to make it from Zade’s kingdom and into the mountain, and Dante shoots his Hell power at one of the crevices and opens a crack big enough for us to fit through at the very peak. Only someone with wings can manage to get this high, but I doubt anyone will find it now.

“Go first, and I’ll follow,” Cassius says, slowing down and shifting to stare behind us.

I nearly tell him to stop being such a cowardly angel and to just go through the portal, but Dante flies ahead and leads the way.

We enter into my kingdom, and he nosedives with Raven and me toward the forest of souls. It’s the furthest place from the pits. I have protected my kingdom with power to keep it separate from Lucian’s because he pissed me off a century ago by trying to take some of my souls while I was in the Mortal Realm.

Unlike in Zade’s, my pathway is impenetrable. I can see my souls, but they can’t escape unless I open the gate to the prison. And that only counts for the worst of the worst. The others are fighting an endless battle on the fields and some are trees in my forest. There are no angels here. That was all Lucian.

“Almost there, pretty soul,” Dante says, his voice lowering to remain quiet.

Cassius swoops beside us, and Dante and him land with a thump. I jump from Dante’s arms but keep Raven in mine and head toward the thickest part of the forest where the trees start to merge together and become one entity with the souls silently screaming as their bones protrude from the bark.

“It’s just up ahead,” I say, gathering my power in my hands. We reach a gigantic tree with a trunk twenty feet across, and I blast my power against it until a portal opens up and darkness greets us.

“You can’t expect me to go in there,” Cassius says, tightening his jaw, increasing the vibrancy of his light to try to peer into the veiled world separating all the levels.
