“Like mine,” Slater interrupts, ignoring Ravi’s grumble.

Serena sighs. “We’ve had enough challenges today. We’ll leave you to work this out in a civilized manner.”

“Perhaps whoever her wolf chooses to procreate with next? That seems fair.” That fucking vampire. Is he insane?

I glower at Josiah. “I’m already pregnant!”

He lifts an eyebrow. “But you need an alpha to claim you and your young, she-wolf. Your body still has time to accept another. Three weeks, maybe?”

“Give or take,” Dawn says, fluttering her wings.

Blathos folds his arms. “That sounds reasonable.”

Like hell, it does. My mind spins. This is so fucking ludicrous. I can’t believe they’re suggesting that whoever has a chance to knock me up with a fucking third kid will be the one who bonds with me.

That shouldn’t be how it works. I don’t want to be in this position.

“So we all agree.” Serena turns to Ravi and Slater. “We hope you will find that satisfactory. It seems to be the most fair. You can take a couple weeks to prepare for the next gathering. We will temporarily open the gateway to the human world for all pack alphas. We expect you to repopulate and replace those lost. Fix your territories. Shadow Moon can’t thrive otherwise. If you don’t, we don’t, so settle your differences and move forward.”

“We don’t care how,” Josiah adds.

I can’t even process what they’re saying.

Not that I get the chance to.

Howls echo through the room as chaos breaks out. Whatever just went down impacts things more than I can comprehend. How? I guess I’ll find out.

“Get her out of here. Now!” Slater hollers, intercepting another alpha. “Gather our packs.”

“What’s happening?” I ask, shaking in Ravi’s arms.

Ravi doesn’t respond. He rushes with me out of the strange room and into a glittering cloud.

The magical haze swallows us whole.

Chapter twenty-one

Chase

Instincts

“Whoa, shit.Youguysokay?” Tristan grabs my shoulder, steadying me.

My head pounds, the rhythmic thumps of a strange, heartbeat-like sounds weakens my knees. Adam shakes his head beside me, whipping his hair around. Palming his forehead, he sucks in a deep breath.

“Do you feel her?” Adam ignores Tristan’s question. “Something’s happening. We need to go. We have to find her.”

He’s right. A mixture of pain, anguish, fear, and shock zing through me as if Eliana’s emotions are my own. I felt this before when we transformed on our first and only full moon and then when she was kidnapped and I was nearly beaten to death.

“Do you hear what I do too?” I massage my fingers into my temples.

“Her heartbeat?” Adam rubs his neck. “Someone else’s. Ravi’s?”

I shrug my shoulders. I can’t distinguish the difference. But I highly doubt it’s Ravi’s. There’s no way his could sound so melodious. It shouldn’t trigger such a strange emotion through me. I know he’s my alpha, but it’s something else. Something more.

“What? You hear heartbeats?” Kellan steps closer and away from his spot in the shade. His eyes dart around the beach, and he frowns. Something indecipherable crosses his face. He almost looks hurt. Disappointed? Maybe.

I bob my head as the pounding fades, leaving my ears ringing. “You know what it means, don’t you?” I blink a few times and shade my eyes from the sun, getting a better look at the world around us. None of the packs blend together except for Evander and Tristan, who shield Davian from the glowers coming from Twilight Cove. They want to murder both him and Kellan. Kellan doesn’t even give them a second look though. He remains unfazed toward the animosity. As for me? I’m on edge. I don’t want to fight. All I want to do is get the fuck out of here. I want to take Eliana somewhere safe. The need grows stronger the longer I think about it. I know she doesn’t want to be here. And not just this island. She doesn’t want to be in this world, and it’s my job to give her what she wants and to protect her. Our child counts on it.
