Fuck. I can’t believe it.

“There must be a mage working magic. I know that the alphas bring omegas to them for answers about their offspring. If you hear a heartbeat, it’s because Eliana carries a piece of you within her. Which means...” Kellan swallows and licks his lips, swiveling and looking away.

It finally dawns on me. He doesn’t hear the heartbeat. Only me and Adam.

“I’m going to be a father?” Adam murmurs, his voice a mixture of fear and awe. “Are you sure? You—”

Kellan growls and raises his palm. “I didn’t hear the heartbeat. I’m nearly certain that’s what you guys are talking about. I shouldn’t have expected or hoped otherwise anyway. I was raised an infraborne.”

I scrub my hand over my face, torn between hugging him and telling him to knock it off because Eliana needs him to be clearheaded.

Adam steps closer and thrusts his arms around Kellan, taking the initiative to hug the sullen wolf. He smacks his back a couple times until Kellan pulls away and blinks his eyes. They sparkle with his tears, but none of them fall. He keeps himself together.

Adam ruffles his fingers through Kellan’s hair, fucking with him. “Blood doesn’t matter, man. We’re a pack. If you want to help with all the baby stuff, I’d be happy with that. Change the diapers. Teach some wolf things.”

“Your child will be born human.” Kellan tightens his jaw with the words. “It won’t belong here. You will either have to choose to remain on the island and away from the territories or send it back to the human world to live a human life.”

Adam tenses with Kellan’s comment, and he swings his attention to me. We share a silent look, his emotions boiling from him to me as we share the same wavelength. Neither him nor Eliana will agree to that. I will never agree to that. We’re not going to raise our children on the volatile, dangerous island outside of the safety of the Sunset Pointe territory, nor are we abandoning it to the human world because it’s human. It’s not going to work like that.

“Fuck that. We are raising my kid with us no matter where we end up.” Adam inhales a couple deep breaths, trying to settle his anger. It doesn’t help that Eliana’s emotions suddenly crash through me. I know he can feel them too. So can Kellan. Something’s up.

A loud whistle cuts through the air, and I spin around and catch sight of Ravi running with Eliana in his arms. They both look rough, bloody and bruised, and it pisses me off. What the fuck happened? He was supposed to protect her.

“Ice Meadow! Sunset Pointe! Get your asses ready. The council has permitted a territory challenge.” Ravi snarls with his words, pounding his feet into the sand.

A territory challenge? What does that even mean?

“Where’s Slater?” Tristan asks, striding toward Ravi.

Ignoring him, Ravi turns to Adam. “Take Eliana. Protect her at all costs.”

I try to intercept Adam to grab her first, but Ravi growls at me.

“You’re coming with me, Chase.” He motions to Kellan and Davian. “You too.”

“I’m going with you.” Tristan straightens his shoulder.

My mind whirls as adrenaline courses through me. Howls ring out as alphas call upon the pack members they brought with them. But there aren’t many.

“I’ll help you, Adam. Isaac told me to stay here.” Evander motions toward the yacht.

Damn it. I don’t want to go with Ravi. I haven’t forgotten that the asshole wanted to end my life with a mercy killing—something I shouldn’t be pissed about, all things considered.

Ravi transforms and lunges at me, nipping at my leg, forcing me to move. It takes everything for me to obey and join him. My soul begs me to stay. Eliana needs me more than ever.

“Hurry and transform. We don’t have much time.” Ravi circles me again, shoving his snout to the back of my leg.

Tugging my shirt off, I kick out of my pants and stretch, summoning the wild beast inside me. My heart speeds up as my wolf breaks free, and I groan with my swift transformation. My senses overwhelm me, Eliana’s fragrance clinging to Ravi, and jealousy sneaks up on me.

“The council has demanded we increase in numbers and will open access to the human world to those worthy. We must stake our claim now. Slater is fighting to lead, but we can’t let him take complete control.” Ravi flashes his fangs with his words, darting forward to lead the way.

Tristan and Kellan flank my sides, encouraging me to join them. Davian runs beside Kellan, keeping close. I get my paws to move and run, heading toward the hazy mist flowing through the strange forest. If I were still human, I’d turn my ass around and not go. It’s as if the world dances with magic, and it fucks with my head. I want to know the scientific explanation for all of this, but it’s out of my reach. I feel inferior in this world. Even more so than I did after having my medical license revoked.

“Ravi, you have to tell me something. What am I expecting?” I ask, catching up to him to run by his side.

Kellan, Tristan, and Davian remain behind us, and I think they do it on purpose. But I’ll fucking challenge Ravi any moment I can. He will not be my superior. I’m only in this position because I’m still learning. I’m afraid he’s going to try to keep me weak on purpose. I know I can be an alpha. I was bitten by his alpha in the first place. I don’t exactly know the reason, but I know it had to do with something involving the two of them. But Ravi won. I’m not exactly upset either. I didn’t want Sean to go anywhere near Eliana.

“We just need to stand our ground. Take what territories we can. Eliana killed Rocco, and the Twilight Cove territory will cause problems if we don’t put them in their place now. I want to seize that area, but I want you, Davian, and Kellan to do it. If you take control, we can extend our power. We will have a great alliance.” Ravi nudges me, directing me toward a clearing in the fog.
