Three days after her disastrous job interview—or rather,non-interview—Savannah received a call from Parker Bishop offering her the job. Basically, the position was hers, and Parker used their phone conversation as an informal interview.

“I appreciate the offer, Parker, but…”

“How about this—you come in and give it a trial run? We’re just sort of in the soft opening phase. Give it a week and if you’re not comfortable or you just hate it, then we can say we tried, right?”

“I don’t know…” She was about to say more when Cash walked into the room and placed a large envelope on the table in front of her. A quick glance showed it was from her lawyer back in Seattle and her heart sank.

“Please, Savannah,” Parker said in earnest. “You had the absolute best resume out of all the applicants and I know at first there won’t be enough hours for you to be here full time like you wanted, but I promise we’re going to grow!”

That was odd. They hadn’t gotten to the point of talking about hours the other day, so how did she know about that?

Cash sat down opposite her, looking as sweet and innocent as could be, and she had her answer.

“Um…can I call you back in a little while? Something’s come up that I need to deal with right now.”

“Oh, of course! I look forward to talking to you. Bye!”

Putting her phone down, Savannah eyed her friend warily. “What did you do?”

His eyes went a little wide, but he said nothing.

She studied him and for a moment she forgot to be annoyed and simply noticed all the ways he had changed in the last three months. He’d lost some weight, his hair was a lot grayer, and he just looked a little…frail. The doctors had told them he didn’t have a lot of time left and initially advised against this trip. They said it would be too much for him, but Cash was determined to come back and made amends to his sons.

So far, he’d yet to make any attempt at doing so.

But that was the least of her issues right now.

“Cash, seriously. What did you do? Why is Parker Bishop tracking me down and offering me a job without a proper interview?”

He shrugged and then nodded at the envelope. “I think your divorce papers are finally here.”

Rolling her eyes, she huffed with annoyance. “Yes, that’s what it looks like, but you’re going to have to answer my question eventually because I’m not accepting the position unless you do.”

“You’d pass up your dream job just out of spite?” he laughed softly, shaking his head. “You are so damn stubborn.”

“I learned from the best.”

“Touché.” Shifting in his chair, he met her gaze. “Okay, fine. I called Georgia and then I talked to Parker. They both already knew you were more than qualified for the job and if you hadn’t mentioned me to them, you would have gotten the position on the spot, so…”

“Cash…” she said sadly. “I don’t want you fighting my battles for me.”

“It wasn’t a battle, Savi. It was just a really crappy coincidence.” He shrugged. “Besides, I needed to put the kibosh on any gossip my cousin would spread.”

“Gossip? But…I didn’t say anything about you.” And while Savannah knew she’d never talk to anyone about Cash and his situation without first checking with him, she knew he’d do the same with respect to her privacy.

But maybe this was a special situation.

“What did you say, exactly?” She leveled him with a hard glare.

With a loud huff of annoyance, he met her gaze head on. “She wanted to know if you were my kid and I told her no. Happy?”

Truth was, there were so many times in her life when Cash Coleman was more of a father to her than anyone else alive. It was pretty ironic considering his estranged relationship with his own kids. Still, it bugged her that he needed to explain anything to anyone.

“For what it’s worth,” he said, interrupting her thoughts, “Parker’s pretty much giddy to work with you.”

“And Georgia?”
