I sighed. “When was the last time you spoke to her?”

“Four hours ago. She said she was heading downtown to get some supplies for her studio.”

Lily always did this. She would just up and leave and go on some ‘adventure’ and turn up days later with either bruises or smelling like a liquor store.

At first, I had thought she was just acting out. Rebellious child who had been good for so long, but three months turned into nine which turned into a year which then turned into two years.

My mother blamed her lack of free time to spend with her daughter. I blamed the coked-up biker boyfriend she had. I had done my best to keep my distance and allow her to make her own decisions and mistakes, but this was getting out of hand.

“I will handle it, Mom. Don’t worry.”

“Okay, my boy. I will talk to you later.”

“Bye, Mom.”

It was like every single thing just came, one after the other. There was no rest, and this was just my life now. I needed to accept it.
