“You don’t have to answer that.” Grayson looked away. “I already know the answer.”
There was a knowing smile on his face.
I was about to ask him what he meant by that, but then his phone blaring filled the silence.
“Hey, babe,” he answered.
Grayson’s smile slipped from his face, and my heart dropped with it. He stood from his seat, his skin paling.
“Where?” he demanded. He listened to Jade and then he hung up the phone.
“What is it?”
“Lily’s been taken to the hospital. Some idiot attacked her outside the bistro.”
I dropped my bottle and it crashed onto the ground.
“Ethan, we need to—”
He was speaking, but I was already out the door and heading for my truck. With each step I took, I could feel the cracks in my heart growing.
