Chapter 22 - Lily: Unexpected

“I had to call him. He’s her brother,” a familiar voice said in the distance.

My head felt like it was going to implode on itself. The voices were getting louder, and I just wanted them to stop.

“Were you not there last night? She has a beef with her brother. She doesn’t want to be anywhere near him right now.” Was that Maddie?

“He deserves to know.” Jade’s voice pierced through the darkness.

“Ladies, I think we all need to just calm down. The major thing is that she is okay,” Marcus said next.

Where was I? My memory was foggy; the last thing I remembered was leaving the bistro after talking to Jade.

Slowly, things started coming back to me. Max had been there. The stupid psycho had attacked me. I remember seeing Jade’s face before passing out, and I remembered hearing Marcus’ distance scream.

Slowly, I opened my eyes. They felt heavy and were fighting against me, but I used the little strength I had to pry them open. I allowed my vision to adjust to the lighting of the room. Thankfully, it wasn’t too bright.

When I finally came to, I looked at Maddison, Marcus, and Jade, who were still bickering amongst each other.

“I’m just saying you should have consulted me before calling that asshole.” Maddie flipped her hair over her shoulder.

“That asshole happens to be my fiancée and her brother. You are just her roommate,” Jade retorted. “If anyone here has to step back, it’s you. You have known her all of five days.”

“Correction. I’m her friend, and she put me as her emergency contact. So there. Look, I don’t want to fight with you. I’m just trying to look out of Lily. I know she wouldn’t want to face her brother.”

“So, let her decide for herself when she wakes up,” Jade countered.

“Well, she might as well decide now since she is awake.” Marcus looked to me with a relieved smile on his face.

Jade and Maddie rushed to my side and started fussing over me.

“Are you okay?”

“Do you need anything?”

“Is anything painful? Do you need more drugs?”

I swatted their hands away from me. “What I need is some breathing space. I’m fine.”

“Marcus, make yourself useful. Go get the nurse.”

Marcus rolled his eyes. “You don’t tell me what to do, woman. You didn’t even say please.”

Maddie gave him a hard glare which caused him to let out a laugh. Marcus held his hands up in surrender and left the room.

“Where is Max?”

“Behind bars where he belongs. The stupid asshole is going to get what’s coming to him, that’s for sure.” Maddie looked angry. “I swear, if I had been there, I would have sliced his balls.”

“Are you always this violent, or it’s just a situational thing?”

I looked at Jade. “It’s an everyday-type thing. You will get used to it eventually.”

The doctor walked into the room with my patient file in hand.

“Lillian,” she started. “I’m Dr. Straven, how are you feeling?”

“Good, just a little headache, but that should go away, I’m guessing.”
