“Yes, it will.” The doctor then looked to the other three people in the room. “If you all could leave, I would like to examine my patient in private.”

“Um…can Maddie stay please?” I look to Maddie pleadingly. I didn’t want to be left alone.

“Of course.” Dr. Starven smiled. “The two of you can go and wait in the waiting room.”

Jade gave my hand one last squeeze before she left with Marcus not too far behind. When they closed the door behind them, Dr. Straven got to work. After a little poking and some more questions, she was done.

“Now we can talk of the issue of the baby.”

“What?” My heart stilled.

I grabbed Maddie’s hand that was on the edge of my bed. I squeezed it tightly to make sure that I was, in fact, not dreaming. Surely, I had heard her wrong.

Dr. Straven looked at me for a moment a little confused. She then opened my chart to go over something. When she was sure of what she had read, she looked back up at me.

“Yes, you are approximately eight weeks pregnant according to the lab results I have here.”

I blinked.

“There has to be some kind of a mistake. There is no way that I am pregnant. I’m on the pill.”

Dr. Straven came to stand beside me. “Sometimes they fail. Especially if you skip a day or two. Your hormone levels are very sensitive to any changes in the concentration. So, if you skip a day, it could affect your cycle, and you could end up ovulating.”

I tried to think back to every morning I had taken my birth control. Then I thought back to Amberbay. I hadn’t taken my birth control for almost a week because I had been so stressed about what was going on between Ethan and I.

“Shit,” I cursed into the silence. I looked to Dr. Straven apologetically.

“I can see you are in a little bit of shock, so I will give you some time to digest. But as for your baby, it’s healthy and doing well. They have a strong heartbeat and your HcG levels are exactly where they are meant to be. I will come back to check on you after a few hours.”

I couldn’t believe this. I looked down at my flat stomach in complete wonder. There was something living in there.

This explained so much. The sudden emotional mess I had become. My bras fitting a little too snug. Not to mention this increased need to jump Ethan every chance I got.

Ethan. Fuck. How was I going to tell Ethan? He didn’t want a relationship, let alone a baby. What if he didn’t want anything to do with the baby? What if he wanted me to abort?

No.

My free hand came up to cover my stomach. I would not allow that to happen to my baby. I would protect him or her with everything I had.

I had screwed up a lot of things in my life, but I would do right by my child.

“So,” Maddie filled the thick silence. “What are you going to do?”

“I’m keeping it,” I said immediately. There were still a lot of uncertainties floating around in the air, but the one thing I was certain of was my baby. I wanted him or her even if the father didn’t.

“Okay, and I will be right here with you, Lils.” Maddie gave my hand a little squeeze. “And what about Ethan?”

“I would have to tell him. There is no way that I can hide this from him. The baby is half his. I just need a little time to gather my thoughts.”

Maddie nodded in understanding.

“Well, you may need to gather those thoughts quickly because your dumb-dumb sister-in-law told your brother what happened, and he is on his way here with Ethan.”

“What!?” I shrieked. “I’m in no way, shape, or form ready for that conversation yet. When they get here, can you just tell them that the doctor gave me something to make me sleep? I can’t face him right now while I’m still processing.”

Maddie nodded. “Okay, I will keep them out. But in my honest opinion, it’s best just to rip the bandage off quickly, but you do what you are most comfortable with.”

A knock sounded at the door, and I immediately pretended to be asleep. After a second or two, the door opened.
