“Is she out?” It was Marcus.

“Yeah. The doctor gave her something to help with her pain, and it knocked her out.” She was such a good liar.

“Well, Ethan and Grayson just got here, and Nora said she is on her way.”

Maddie scoffed, “What does that witch want here. Does she think we forgot about yesterday? Lily wants nothing to do with her.”

“You can’t speak for Lily, Mads. Nora is her mother, and no matter what happens between the two of them, they will always be family. They will find a way back from this.”

“Just because someone is blood doesn’t mean that they need to be forgiven. I don’t talk to some of my family, and I’m fine.”

There was an extra bite to her words for some reason.

“Are you, though, Maddison? To someone who is outside looking in you are just this pretty shell with a lot of unresolved trauma underneath. All that money and still not happy. What a shame it truly is, Maddison.”

“Stop before I make you stop Marcus,” she bit out. If looks could kill, Marcus would be dead within seconds.

“Just because you have a shitty family situation doesn’t mean Lily has to be the same as you.”

“You know nothing about my life Marcus. So shut up.”

“I know enough to know that you are a stuck-up Paris Hilton wannabe who didn’t get enough love from mommy and daddy.”

Maddie was silent. I think Marcus had struck a nerve. Maddie always had a comeback. She was never one to be stunned into silence.

“Excuse me.” Maddie dropped my hand. I heard her footsteps move away from me.

“Maddie, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean anything by—” Marcus was cut off by the sound of the door opening and closing. “Dammit, Maddison.”

I heard the door open and close again, and I presumed I was alone once more.

After a few minutes passed, sleep started to come on. I was almost into dreamland when I heard the door open and close again. I kept up my little ruse, making sure to not move.

My heart hammered hard in my chest when his scent hit my nose. As he drew closer, my senses went into overdrive. I felt his presence beside me by the bed. I didn’t move.

His soft hand clasped mine into his. I didn’t move.

He brought my hand to his lips in a gentle kiss. I didn’t move.

His lowered himself and placed a warm kiss on my forehead. I didn’t move.

“I’m so sorry.” His voice was barely above a whisper, but it filled my ears loudly. There was so much in those three words that he had just said.

I didn’t know what exactly he was apologizing for, but I also knew I didn’t need to know.

When he pulled away from me, my eyes slowly fluttered open. My blue eyes connected with his.

“Hey,” I whispered.

There were tears welling in his eyes, a sight I was not used to seeing. Ethan was not a wear-my-heart-on-my-sleeve kind of character. But seeing him so vulnerable and raw felt like personal treasure that he only allowed me to see.

“Hey, baby,” he whispered back.

No other words were exchanged, but somehow, I just knew that we were going to be just fine. The anxiety I had felt moments ago had faded.
