Chapter 23 - Ethan: Revelation

Grayson and I barged through the door to the hospital. I was in a panic and moving on autopilot, while Grayson was the picture of calm. I rushed to the front desk.

“Linda, I’m looking for a patient. Her name is Lilian Stone, and she came in not too long ago,” I rushed.

“Hello to you, too, Dr. Masters. You know the protocol. I can’t divulge patient information to anyone who is not family.”

“She is my family, dammit!” I slammed my hand on the desk.

“Dr. Masters.” Linda’s aged eyes scrutinized me. “If you cannot be calm, I will have you removed from the premises.”

I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked to see Grayson. He gently pulled me back.

“I’m her older brother. Please can you help me out here, Linda.”

Linda huffed, frustrated, “I will check for you. Just give me a minute.”

Grayson nodded, while I was still trying to get a handle on my emotions. My chest felt like it was caving in on itself, and I was suffocating from the inside out. This was a feeling I had never felt before in my entire life.

I keeled over and placed my hands on my knees.

“Hey.” Grayson came to my side. “Are you okay?“

I breathed in and out deeply. I patted my chest like I could make the heaviness go away. My head was spinning with all sorts of thoughts. I needed to see her. I needed to make sure that she was okay. I needed to make sure that she was breathing.

I stood up straight, tuning to my best friend. “I need to see her. I need to hold her, and make sure she is okay. I need to…I can’t lose…she needs to be…I can’t…”

Words were failing me. I couldn’t breathe. I felt suffocated.

Grayson pulled me into him and wrapped his arms around me. I tried to pull away, but he just held on tighter. The heaving in my chest turned into low cries until I found myself in tears.

As we stood in the middle of the of the waiting room, I cried into my best friend’s arms. I was never one who showed emotions. I always kept it collected and calm. That was how I had been raised. I had been taught that men never cry. But I couldn’t hold back.

“Dr. Masters?” Linda called from behind me.

My low cries sobered, and I pulled out of Grayson’s arms. I turned to look to Linda who had a loom of sympathy on her face. I didn’t want her pity. I wanted answers about Lily’s status. There was nothing else that I cared about.

“She just got done with treatment. She should be in her room now. It’s room 218. It’s on the second floor.”

I was already moving before she finished. I heard Grayson thank her behind me before he followed me. I got into the elevator, and he followed suit. I pressed the second floor, and the doors closed.

“You love her,” Grayson said into the silent elevator. “You may not admit it to yourself, but I know you love her. Your actions downstairs proved it to me.”

I remained silent.

Grayson then turned to me. “Don’t be an idiot. If you love her, you better tell her today or you can walk.”

“Are you threatening me?”

He shook his head. “No. I’m simply pointing you in the right direction. I know my sister, and I know she is probably head over heels in love with you. If you aren’t sure about her, then you need to make a decision and not leave her in limbo.”

The doors dinged open to the second floor.

I tore my eyes away from Grayson and walked down the hallway. I came to a halt when I saw Marcus and Jade standing in the waiting area.

“Where is she?” I asked them

Jade ran to Grayson and Marcus came to greet me.
