As she laughed quietly, Elite took that as an opportunity to connect his lips with hers. She held him close by his neck, melting against his hard frame. The moment Elite’s tongue swirled around hers, Jacintha moaned.

“I missed you,” she admitted, getting an immediate smile out of him.

“I’m right here.”

“No.” She sighed and ran her hands down the back of his head. “I missed this. Us. The intimacy. Having you close.”

She expected him to say it was her fault that things had been off between them. Instead, Elite said, “We can fix that. If you want to.” He put an inch of space between them and looked down at her lips. “Do you want to?”

Jacintha wanted to say yes, but thoughts of last night…

“Of cou—shit!” The sound of her phone vibrating caught her so off guard she jumped. “That’s probably B. She’s been texting me all day.”

Unmoved, Elite continued to stare at his wife. As much as she wanted to harden toward him, the longer his honey-colored eyes bore into hers, the harder it was for her to not tell him the truth.

“I don’t give a fuck about that shit. Can Ipleaseshare a moment with my wife?”

Shoulders slouched, Jacintha’s head dropped as the ringing stopped. Only a few seconds passed before it started up again. With a soft shake of his head, Elite removed himself from between her legs and left the kitchen. Jumping down off the counter, Jacintha quickly snatched her phone off the black and cream marble island.

“Your timing could not be any worse,” she said as her greeting, lowering the heat on her collard greens and putting on the top.

“Well, you won’t answer my text messages, so I had to call.”

“I planned to call you after Elite left,” she whispered, sliding into her Crocs and heading for the back porch. It was crisp out, but she didn’t plan to stay outside long.

“So what happened? That nigga really put his hands on you? You tell Elite?”

Jacintha scoffed. “That the nigga I was about to cheat with choked me and slammed me onto a car because I popped his bitch in the mouth? Nah. I didn’t tell him that, B.”

Bianca sighed heavily into the phone. “You wouldn’t have to tell him all that. Just that a nigga tried to talk to you and violated when you shut him down.”

Her eyes rolled and head shook as she nibbled her thumb nail. “Nah. I can’t lie to him. What I did was bad enough on its own.”

“Well, ol’ boy that knocked his ass out wants you to call him so he can make sure you’re okay. He gave me his number last night after Angel came and told me what happened. Do you want me to text it to you?”

“Yeah, I guess. I can at least thank him again. People are crazy these days, so I do appreciate him helping me out.”

“And his ass was fine as hell too!”

“Honestly, I barely noticed.”

“That’s understandable. Maybe you should tell him to send you a picture for his contact after you text him.”

“Girl, bye. I’m not doing all that. I’m just going to text him thank you and that I’m good. His number won’t even be saved.”

“Mhm. I’ll text you.”

“Aight.”

After disconnecting the call, Jacintha quickly made her way back inside the home Elite purchased for them the same week she said she loved it. She wanted something big enough for the twins and the baby she was sure they’d have together, yet small enough to not feel empty when the kids moved away. Needing to make things right, or at least as right as they could be, Jacintha headed upstairs in search of Elite.

She found him in the master bedroom, sliding into a pair of black sweatpants.

“Sorry about that. You know her birthday party is tonight, and she wanted to go over some last-minute details.” Elite nodded. “So… What are you doing tonight? I’m sure Bianca would love it if you came to her party with me.”

“You didn’t mention wanting me there, so I made plans with Preme and Nicole.”

Her head shook. “And who else? Because I know you’re not going to be the third wheel.”
