My head spins at all the information.

“But that doesn’t make sense. Why would Niko ever give up the location of the island to you?”

“You’d be surprised what a man will do when there’s a knife to his throat.”

Something about the way he says it doesn’t sit right with me.

“You’re lying. Niko would never betray Mateo.”

“You think you know these people but you don’t. Right now, I’m your only hope. Now get on the fucking boat.” The last part comes out gritty, his patience starting to wane.

My loyalty is torn between Mateo and my father.

Do I trust this man? Do I get in this boat, believing that he’s actually taking me to my father? And if he does, what happens then? More importantly, what happens to Mateo?

Something about the whole situation feels wrong. I can’t explain why. Call it a gut feeling. Either way, I can’t shake the warning bells pinging like sirens inside my head.

Gunfire coming from behind me causes me to jump and I turn to see men sprinting toward the dock. Someone fires another shot into the air.

“Fuck.” Before I can register Danny’s movements, he grabs my arm and shoves me into the boat. Not able to stabilize my balance, my hip catches the edge of the bench seat on my way down, causing pain to shoot through my leg. I hit the floor on a hard thud.

I’ve barely recovered from the shock of the fall when the floor begins vibrating beneath me, the engine coming to life. He turns, working furiously to get the boat unlatched with only one hand, his gun clenched tightly in the other. I can tell by the way he’s panicking that he knows he’s out of time.

Abandoning his effort to detach the boat, he straightens and aims his gun at me.

My entire body seizes in fear.

“Drop the fucking gun, Danny!”

My eyes fly toward Mateo’s voice, my heart speeding at the sight of him. He’s here? How is he here? I barely register the other three men that close in on us, all of them with guns drawn, pointing directly at Danny.

What happens next unfolds in front of me in rapid succession.

I watch as Danny’s finger slides across the trigger.

I hear the loud bang of a shot fired.

I close my eyes, preparing for the pain I know is coming...

Only after a few seconds, I realize I feel nothing.

I open my eyes to see Danny hunker forward, cradling his arm to his chest as blood pours out of his forearm, his gun on the floor a couple of feet from me.

I glance back to Mateo, his gun still pointed, smoke billowing from the barrel. “Get him out of there.”

Two men rush into the boat, both grabbing ahold of Danny as they tug him onto the dock. Once they have him restrained, Dimitri leans down and offers me a hand.

“Are you okay?” he asks, helping me from the boat.

“I... I think so.”

Honestly, I think I’m in shock.

“Get her to her fucking room!” Mateo barks at Dimitri before jogging after the two men dragging Danny back up the dock.

“Mateo, wait!” I call after him.

He needs to know what I know. He needs to know my father is coming.
