CHAPTER TWELVE

“YOU REALLY OUTDID YOURSELFtoday.” Mateo steps into the room as I’m slipping on an old t-shirt to sleep in.

“Was the curtsey too much?” I smile.

“Maybe.” He gives me a knowing look. “But given that you put together what we couldn’t, I’ll let it slide.”

“I can’t believe no one thought of it before now,” I say, watching him kick off his shoes before taking a seat on the edge of the mattress.

I cross around the bed, pressing myself between his legs before my hands do a full sweep through his hair. He looks up at me with tired eyes, his lack of rest over the last few days showing clearly on his face.

“It was staring us right in the face the entire time.”

“It was.” I nod, sliding my hands down to his shoulders. “But sometimes when you become so focused on one thing you overlook everything else.”

“I knew Niko wouldn’t betray me. I should have dismissed the idea right away.” He grimaces. “He’d be proud of what you did today, you know?”

“I doubt that.”

“I’m serious. He never would have admitted it to you, but I know he would’ve been.”

“You miss him.” It’s not a question. I know he does.

“He was my oldest friend. Of course I miss him. But I can’t think about that right now. There’s a job that needs to be done and even if it kills me, I’m going to see it through.”

“So what’s the plan?”

“We wait.”

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

“And if he doesn’t find us?”

“He will. It’s not a matter of if, but when.”

“You think someone here will tip him off?”

“Honestly, I would like to say no. The men that are here have been by my side for years, some since I was a boy. But after Danny, I’m having a difficult time trusting anyone.”

“That’s understandable.”

“I don’t have a choice but to trust them though. What else can I do?”

“Is there anyone whose loyalty is not in question?”

“Ox. Ross. Javier. Dimitri.”

“Can I ask you something?” I turn, taking a seat on the bed next to him. “Dimitri,” I continue without waiting for his response. “He hasn’t been with you long. Is there any chance that he could be working for my father? I mean, maybe he’s been laying low, waiting for his opportunity to seek revenge.”

“I thought you liked Dimitri.” He gives me a questioning look.

“I do. I just wondered if you had ever considered the possibility.”

“No.” He shakes his head.

“Are you sure? You did kill his father.”
