This was a situation we had to be smart about.

“Tatiana, we have an opportunity here,” Jake said, taking a chance on moving closer yet again. “It’s why I stopped when I saw your bike.”

I rolled my eyes. “You didn’t stop ’cause you saw my bike. You have this building being watched and someone let you know I was here alone.”

He didn’t deny it.

Couldn’t.

“Either way,” he continued, “An opportunity is still in front of us, an alliance between our clubs. Groundbreaking shit, like my father, grandfather, could never imagine.”

I laughed, right in his damn face. “Yeah, mine either, considering your father and grandfather would’ve strung mine up from trees beforeeverconsidering an alliance.”

“I’m trying to be better than them.”

“Good for you. ThePredatorshave no interest in being part of your process,” I told him. “You wanna bewokeor whatever the fuck? Nice. Have fun with that. But we’ll never mistake you and yours as anything butops.”

A sudden commotion outside pulled both of our attention away from each other to the window instead. Of course Jake hadn’t shown up alone, his father was president of their club, and Jake himself was more than just a member, based on theRoad Captainpatch on his jacket. He had muscle with him, like I should, honestly.

Especially with the current circumstances considered.

There were five bikes out front, mine, Jake’s, plus three others, none of which held a rider. Looking out a little further, I could see two large bundles slumped on the pavement…

Bodies?

Beside me, Jake went for his weapon, but mine was already drawn.

“Uh-uh,” I told him, aiming right between his eyes. “Hands up.”

“What the fuck is this?” he asked. “Some kind of ambush?”

“You tell me,” I demanded, as a loud thump echoed from down the hall. “What the hell is happening?”

“I don’t know.”

My grip tightened on my gun as my heart raced, wondering what was about to happen. It was silly of me to have come alone when I could’ve easily grabbed a few enforcers.

It was funny, almost, that I’d chosen solitude because I wanted peace.

This was quite the opposite.

The sound of footsteps coming toward us made me employ a subtle switch, aiming there instead of at Jake as I backed away, keeping both possible sources of danger in view.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” I muttered to myself when Onyx appeared in the doorway. He locked eyes with me briefly, then looked to Jake.

“Are you gonna be cool, or I gotta kick your ass too?”

“I’m at the mercy of Ms. Tate right now, so I’m not making any sudden movements,” Jake answered, shrugging. “You killed my guys?”

“Nope. Just a little nap.”

Jake let out a breath. “Suppose I should thank you.”

“Not unless Tati says you can walk away from here. There’s still time for this all to end different,” Onyx said, with none of the good humor or jesting he’d employed with me before. His eyes were cold, shoulders tense, clothes splattered with the dark red evidence that he’d done whatever he might be accused of.

He was terrifying.

Jake saw it too.
