“What have I told you about talking like that?”

“What the fuck you gone do about it?”

“Oh myGod, get a room.” I laughed, waving them off. They did indeed head towards the back, to do God knows what, and a moment later Keira jumped up, rattling off something about catching Gavin to talk numbers before he left. She gave a quick hug to Maite, who was approaching the table as she rushed off.

“Ahhh, you look cuuute,” Maite gushed, excitedly taking a seat beside me. “You okay?”

I took a deep breath, really considering it before I nodded. “Yeah. I am.”

“Good. Let me tell youthisshit.”

I sat back with my drink and listened as she regaled me with too many details about the things she’d been doing with Trinidad.

“Maite, we’re supposed to be on lockdown, you know that, right? We’rethis closeto launching a damn assault on theRenegadosand you’re fucking that man’s wife still?!”

“I can’t help who I love!” she whined.

“Bitch, you’re gonna get your ass killed, talking aboutlove!”

She huffed, sitting back with her arms crossed. “We’re being careful, damn! Do you wanna know what I have to tell you or not?”

“I wanna know why you don’t think it’s risky as fuck for Trinidad to be sneaking you into that house—which, how? How?”I repeated, legitimately confused. “Manuel is gonna go upsidebothyour heads, if I don’t first.”

She sucked her teeth. “And I’ll have something for his bitch ass if he tries me. Butlisten!”

“What?” I asked, glaring at her.

“While I was there, Manuel got a visitor. I had to wait until those scary niggas wasall the waygone before I could leave.”

My eyebrow went up. “Scary?”

“Girl…Terrifying. Some old fucking French dude and some younger guys with tats like the one Nyx has. I don’t know what that shit means, but I know it ain’t good; those niggas were dead in the eyes.”

“You saw their eyes; so they saw you?” I asked, chest tight.

“One of them did, but he just didn’t react, likeat all.Like some kind of brainwashing,” she said. “I just acted like I was supposed to be there and didn’t say anything. But I’m telling you, something about this shit isnotright.”

She had no idea how correct she was.

“Did you overhear any of the meeting?” I asked, already picking up my phone to shoot a text to the group chat with Brandon, Onyx, and Alicia. I didn’t knoweverythingaboutThe Gardenand all that, but Ididknow enough to deduce that Maite had probably seen Renard Belrose, in yet another meeting with Rojas.

After their last meeting, people had died.

“No, sorry,” Maite answered. “I would’ve tried to get closer, but I was afraid of getting caught.”

“You did the right thing.Keepbeing afraid your ass is going to get caught and stay out of that man’s house,” I told her as my phone lit up with notifications.

The fervor died down quickly though because all we could really do was exactly what we’dbeendoing.

Speculating.

“I see you decided to pop out looking good,” Onyx said, appearing seemingly out of nowhere at the head of the table. “Why you hiding back here?”

“How did you know where I was? Stalker much?” I asked, as he slid into the empty space on the other side of me in the circular booth.

He looked at Maite. “You going to tell her you told me she was here or not?” he said to Maite, who rolled her eyes.

“I would think getting shot would calm you down, but there’s never any chill with you, huh?”
