TATI

“Now why’dyou have to bring me into this?” Maite asked, fidgeting with her top from the passenger seat of the car. I’d barely pulled off from picking her up, and already, she was complaining.

I hit her with a side eye. For somebody who didn’t want to be brought into this, she was sure as hell doing a lot primping in the visor mirror. “Now you know damn well your baby Trinidad is going to be over there.”

“She’s got a man.”

I laughed atthatshit. “That sure as hell didn’t keep you from knocking la jefa down what… like a month ago?”

“Did you just call her a heifer?” Maite asked, eyes wide. “Why she gotta be all that?”

“No, la jefa, like, the boss, since she’s… never mind,” I laughed. “’Cause I think you’re playing purposely dense.”

“I’m not playing. I don’t know anything, I haven’t seen anything,” she said, using a careful finger to wipe away a tiny lipstick smudge. “I look okay?”

“Why do you care? You trying to get bagged?”

“Maybe so, everybody else is.”

I huffed. “Not everybody, babe,” I told her, shaking my head. “I think I’m over it with Kev.”

“Finally?”

“Finally? Damn.” I laughed. “Was it like that?”

“You were the only person who couldn’t see it, hon, that nigga is so corny.”

I sighed. “No, I could definitely see it; that was a feature, not a bug.”

Maite leaned forward, eyes narrowed as she frowned at me. “Now what now?”

“I said what I said.” I shrugged. “I’m not trying to be serious with anyone, sowhywould I be fucking somebody who givessettle downvibes? That’s how you end up catching feelings, and get your damn feelingshurt,” I explained. “What sense would it make, being laid up with somebody I enjoy? Fuck around and have me telling that nigga I wanna have his babies.”

She poked her lip out, eyes up to the roof of the car as she bobbed her head in a slow nod. “You know…”

“Salient point, is itnot?” I laughed.

“I mean… if that’s how you wanna get down…”

I sucked my teeth. “You could’ve been knocking down the bachelorette party bitches that just wanna ‘be adventurous’ for a night, but who do you do instead?FuckingTrinidad. Married and emotionally unavailable.”

“Hold up, why am I getting dragged?!”

“It’s not a dragging, just an observation.”

“Observesome business of your own, like ol’ boy from the other night.”

My eyes wereveryfocused on the road. “Who?”

“Bitch you know who,” she scoffed. “You’re off Kev’s dick, pleasetell me you’re getting on that one. I don’t evenlikemen and that nigga might could talk me into something.”

Mouth open, I turned to Maite. “Are you talking about Onyx? He’s fine like that to you?”

She curled her face up at me. “To me andeverybody, girl! It’s not even solely looks, he’s just…it.Whatever the male equivalent of a bad bitch is—that’s him. Could you imagine? Getting your hands tangled up in those locs? And girl, the earring? I would lick that shit.”

“Maite!”
