At all.

“You should look at it like… a reset,” I told him. “Go get your mind right, unwind, and then come back better, you know?”

Kev nodded over my words, then blinked, surprised, as he took in my appearance. “You dressed like that for dinner with your mother?” he asked, stepping way too close, way too fast. I could smell the liquor emanating from him and immediately pushed him off.

“I hadPredatorbusiness earlier and didn’t change,” I explained, taking a few steps back. “Go ahead and grab your phone; order that ride, remember?” I asked, as my own phone started ringing.

Shit.

I was supposed to call my mother.

“I gotta answer this.Order the ride,” I said, leaving him in the foyer as a loud crack of thunder rumbled through the house. “Hey Mama, sorry,” I told her as soon as I had the phone up to my ear. “But in my defense, I’m not actually settled yet; I got distracted.”

“Hopefully with thatfineyoung man that was flirting with you at my door,” she teased, and I rolled my eyes.

“Please don’t start.”

“Don’t start what? Asking you why you hadn’t introduced me to him before? Well that’s okay, you can tell me all about himnow.”

“Oh myGod.” I laughed, picking up the glass of wine I’d poured earlier. “There’s nothing to tell. Onyx is the new guy. Brandon had him come by to give us some info. That’s it.”

She sucked her teeth. “Mmmhmm. I know that ain’t it, but I’m gonna let you slide for now.”

“Only because you don’t like being on the phone when it’s raining, girl.” I chuckled. “I’m sure I’ll have to get you off my back about this later.”

“Long as you know. Love you. Bye.”

“Love you too, Mama,” I said, lifting my glass to finish it off once she’d hung up the phone.

“So Onyx had dinner with your mother too?”

“Shit,” I sputtered, damn near choking on a mouthful of wine from the shock of hearing Kev’s voice from right behind me. Coughing to clear my throat, I turned to face him, nose curled in annoyance. “What are you talking about?”

With his face crumpled like he was on the verge of tears; Kev shook his head. “You said you went for dinner with your mother, dressed liked you wanted to be slutted out,” he said, stepping toward me, too close again. “Did you dress like that for him?”

“I dress like this all the time. It’s what gotyourattention, remember?” I snapped, setting my glass down on the counter. “So no, I didn’t dress like this forhim.”

“But you did fuck him?” he questioned, right in my face.

“Okay, this is getting crazy; maybe youshouldjust wait outside. I’m sure the porch is protection enough from the rain, and if not, maybe it’ll sober you up some.”

He shook his head again. “Just answer the question, did you fuck him? Is this why I didn’t get that position? ’Cause he’s my replacement?”

“Kev, get out of my house,” I said, carefully, quietly, trying to keep my composure.

“Did you fuck him?!” Kev bellowed, making me shrink back, but he’d already snatched me by the wrists and dragged me against him. I tried to snatch away from his grasp, but that only seemed to make him squeeze tighter.

“Motherfucker let me go,right now,” I screamed, trying in vain to wrestle out of his grip.

“Or what?!” he growled at me. “What the fuck isanybodygoing to do?”

I aimed a knee at his groin, tried to, but he dodged it, slamming me against the wall behind me. Colors exploded in front of my eyes as my head bounced off the hard surface and I realized very suddenly that…

Nobody was going to do anything.

There was nobody here to help me.

“Did you fuck him?” he asked as he slammed me against the wall again, and even though I didn’t even know exactly who he was referring to anymore, I shook my head, struggling to even keep upright.

“No.No,” I groaned because it was the truth and because I wasn’t stupid. I wasn’t about to antagonize him. Not that it mattered.

“Good,” he said grinning right in my face as he put a hand around my neck, and squeezed, dragging my half limp body away from the wall, out of the kitchen.

To my bedroom.
