He chuckled a little. “No, Tati. Nothing happened, I’ve just been a bit busy,” he said. “Filling in the gaps.”

“You mean taking my place.”

“No.” He immediately shook his head. “I could never do that. Nobody can. It’s okay for you to rely on your chain of command, damn. Everything shouldn’t be on just the two of you.”

I nodded.

He was right.

Although for obvious reasons our fathers had been the most significant loss for us, specifically, the whole club had taken a hit. It was a move that would have completely killed thePredatorsas a club if they hadn’t already prepared me and Brandon for it.

We were busy grieving and managing the club and maybe having a war and building a whole business… and rebuilding the chain of command had been another welcome distraction from it all.

But it was still tough.

“So what are you doing here?” I asked, and he stepped through the door, holding up a bag of food. “Maite called me, said you really wanted Thai food. She asked if I could bring it.”

My mouth dropped open for a moment, confused, but then I shook my head. “I didn’t tell her I wanted food. And even if I did, I wouldn’t have askedyouto bring it. Thai is my favorite though, aside from my mother’s cooking. Which is probably why she did this.”

He nodded. “I get it. Have the most handsome nigga she knows bring you your favorite food, seems like guaranteed mood booster, right?” he said and I laughed.

“Something like that.”

“Okay well… I hear you; you didn’t ask for it, but… are you hungry?”

I frowned, thinking about it.

Ishouldbe, considering I hadn’t eaten anything today, unless me picking at the breakfast Keira had dropped off earlier counted. Another side effect I guess, of being so disconnected.

“I could eat,” I agreed. “Shouldeat.”

“Come on then,” he said, leaving the room with the bags instead of just handing them over, heading toward my kitchen as I followed.

“Um, I can feed myself,” I told him.

“Good, grab a plate,” he said, giving me a confused look. “You handle yours, and I’ll handle mine.”

I wrinkled my nose. “Yours? So you stopped to get me food and grabbed yourself something too?

“That a problem?” he asked. “I been working, I’ve gotta eat.”

“Onyx, all youdois eat. It’s always about food with you.Every time I seeyou, you’re eating.” I laughed. “Like it’s just your damn favorite thing to do.”

He caught my gaze, smirking as he put the bag down on the counter. “As a matter of fact, eatingismy favorite thing to do, Tati,” he told me, with a little wink that…

Oh.

Okay.

TheanythingI was looking for earlier?

There it was.

Right between my legs.

Something.

But instead the mischief I’d normally see from Onyx, his amusement was quickly replaced with regret, eyes wide. “Oh shit, I’m sorry. You probably don’t—”
