“This isn’tfunny,” I whined, and Loren laughed.

“I’m not beingfunny.I’m serious. Are all of y’all really just operating like pregnancy isn’t evenpossible?” Loren asked. “That’s the problem, right there. Have you missed a period?”

“No.” I immediately countered. “I mean… not… not really? It was… kinda light.”

“Implantation bleeding, my dear,” Loren said, then sipped.

“You need to take a test,” Alicia said, finally speaking again. “It’s the only way to really know.”

“I’mnotpregnant.”

“Because you said so. Right. That’s super scientific,” Loren giggled, then stood. “Come on, let’s go get a test. You’re driving, since you’re the sober one.”

I looked to Alicia, wanting her to be the voice of reason, but instead… she drained the rest of her wine glass, and stood. “Come on.”

It was a short trip.

There was a convenience store just up the block, and Loren volunteered to go in. She came back with a bag filled with several tests and a water bottle she made me guzzle on the way back, just in case.

Thirty minutes after she first introduced the possibility…

It was confirmed.

Pregnant.

“What thefuckam I supposed to do with this?” I asked out loud, staring at the two pink lines confirming the positive. I looked up, looking between Alicia and Loren, wanting one of them to tell me what to do.

“Well… you’ve got options,” Loren said, taking a pragmatic approach. “Nothing says you have to keep the pregnancy. And… it’s worth mentioning that a positive test doesn’t mean its viable. A tubal raises the risks of ectopic pregnancy, so we should probably get you into the office real soon, so we can see what’s happening.”

My eyes went wide. “Ectopic… what is that?”

“It means the egg implanted somewhere it can’t actually grow,” Loren explained. “And if that’s the case, it’s a pretty dangerous thing for you, that will need to be immediately taken care of. So it’s great that we’ll have caught it early.”

I shook my head, pressing a hand to my stomach. “But it’s not that. I don’t… want it to be that.”

Alicia raised an eyebrow. “So… youwantto be pregnant? You want a baby?”

“I… don’t know,” I sighed. “Can anybody want something they didn’t believe was possible?”

“That’s the story of our lives,” Alicia reminded me. “Wanting the impossible. And look at all these other “impossible”thingsthat you’ve grabbed onto.”

I let out another breath. “You’re right, but this is…wow.”

Before anyone else could say anythingelse, our quiet was interrupted by noise.

Familiar male voices mixed in with the youthful soprano of a child.

Cree coming in, with Yaya in tow, and Pen, who was supposed to be dropping Yaya off from their girls’ day… and Isaiah.

They stopped at the door to the living room, their expressions concerned as they looked around at us, probably wondering why the energy was so serious.

“Mommy, you took a temp-uh-cha?” Yaya asked, and my eyes went big, realizing she thought the pregnancy test—perched on top of the box, on the coffee table—was a thermometer.

“Uh… yeah, sure,” Loren said, snatching the box and test up, but there was no way the guys hadn’t already seen it.

So…

Okay.
