“Please, it was just a kiss, it’s not like I was trying to jump your bones. Can I at least have coffee?”

I shake my head. “Sorry, baby, you can have water, but no coffee until the doctor comes around and clears it.”

She huffs at me and sulks as I get up to go get her some water.

After I came back with her water, I tried to talk to her about Maddie, but the doctor interrupted us. They took her for some scans and tests, and by the time they brought her back, she was so exhausted she just wanted to sleep.

I’ve sat in this chair for three hours, watching her sleep. I hate the fact that she’s going to be stuck in here. I wish I could take her home. I really don’t want to leave her, but I’m going to have to go talk to my brothers soon––we’re going to need to discuss the next options, now that we know who was behind the shootout at the club.

She stirs, and a groan escapes her mouth. I jump up. “Sweetheart?”

“Hey.”

“Here, have some water.” I lift her head slightly, placing the straw to her lips so she can take a drink.

“Thank you.” She gives me a tired smile, her head leaning back on the pillow.

“Maddie wants to see you, sweetheart.”

“No, not in here, Ronan, please, not like this.”

I climb onto the bed. She pulls herself up and I move so she can lean on me. “She’s asking for you. We had to tell her something, so Ma told her you were sick, said you’d picked up a bug.”

“Oh God, really?”

“She was a little freaked, but Finn was there and he kept her calm, told her some bullshit story about you getting sick saving a unicorn from a storm… Kill’s not so happy about being referred to as a unicorn, but Mad’s thinks you’re a hero.”

She laughs. “Ouch, it hurts when I laugh. He really told her that?”

I nod, even though she can’t see me. “What do you say I call him to bring her in? Just for half an hour, just so she can see you?”

“Do you think maybe you can get Finn to distract her for one more night, please? I’m exhausted and I don’t think I have it in me to pretend to her tonight. But can we maybe call her at bedtime?”

“Of course, sweetheart. Also, the doc cleared you for coffee…”

“Oh my God, really? Please, baby, can you get me some, pleeeaaasee?”

“Mmmhmm.” I place a kiss on her forehead and go out to grab her some coffee and text Finn.

Me

No visit tonight, she’s too tired.

Finn

Mad’s is gonna be gutted.

Me

Come up with an excuse.

Liv wants to call at bedtime though.

Finn

Okay. Will call you at eight.
