I continue to watch for another couple of minutes before deciding I need to get the hell out of here. I know I don’t know him very well, but I’ve never been scared of him before… but when he got in my face, I actually felt afraid. I didn’t know what he was going to do.

I get up from the sofa and head towards the door. I didn’t even realise the brothers had headed to the back until I open the door and the three of them are standing there.

Connor reaches for my arm as Killian turns to Finn. “Go get her a whiskey.”

They push me back into the room and lead me to the sofa. I feel awkward and a little afraid of these men––I know these men are part of the O’Farrell Syndicate, I know the sort of thing they are capable of, I just don’t know if they would hurt me.

Killian goes to a cabinet behind the desk, leaning in and grabbing a medium size box, while Connor sits down with me on the couch. I look from one to the other, the silence is deafening, and I’m finding it a little difficult to swallow. Finn walks back into the room and hands me a large glass of whiskey, when Connor finally speaks.

“We have some arnica gel to rub on your arm. I’m sorry Ronan grabbed you like that, he just kind of… gets a little clouded.”

I nod as Killian sits on the arm of the sofa, opening a tube of the gel and rubbing it on my arm where Ronan grabbed me. I look down and notice that it’s already starting to bruise. Shit.

“You don’t have to be afraid of us, lass.” I look up at Killian when he speaks to me.

“We saw you out there, you aren’t afraid of Ronan, despite the small flicker of fear when he got in your face. How do you know him?”

“I, erm…” I look at them, and they all stare at me, waiting for an answer.

I down the whiskey and stand. “We met in Chicago three months ago, he said he was there on business and I, erm, we hooked up a couple of times. Look, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to cause any trouble, I swear I didn’t follow him here, I didn’t even know he was from New York. Thank you for the whiskey and the gel, and the job… I’m just going to grab my things and go.”

I start for the door, but Connor stops me.

“Wait… we’ve never seen anyone pull Ronan out of his darkness like that, not since Rory.”

I turn, looking at them. I’m confused… who the hell is Rory? I go to speak but Finn speaks up. “Shit, he didn’t tell you about Rory, did he?”

I shake my head. “No, we agreed that it was just a bit of fun and that we wouldn’t share anything about our lives. I’m sorry, can you please apologise to Ronan for me? I’ll get my things and say goodbye to Dan.”

“Wait out front, I’ll grab my keys and drive you home.”

“Erm… Killian, you do…”

“It’s fine, lass. Wait for me, I’m taking you home, no arguments.”

I open and close my mouth a couple more times, then figure there’s no point arguing, he seems pretty resolute. I nod my head then head out to grab my things and say goodbye to Dan.

“I’m so sorry, Dan, I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. Thank you for everything over the last few weeks, I appreciate it.” I give him a sad smile. I feel so guilty for what Ronan did. I feel like it was my fault, although I’m not entirely sure why. I can already feel the stress getting to me. I need this job; I have no idea how long it will take to find another job that pays so well or that is so flexible with my visitation schedule.

“Hey.” He reaches out and touches my arm. “None of this is your fault. Ronan… he just has a few demons. It’s okay, I’m good. And I’ll talk to the guys about your job…”

“Hand’s off, Dan.” Killian comes from the back and stands beside me, glaring at Dan.

“Let’s go, Liv.” He touches my arm and guides me back down the staff corridor and out the back door to his waiting car.

“Killian, I appreciate the offer to drop me off, but I’m way too far out of your way. I can hop on the subway, it’s still pretty early.”

He opens the passenger door and indicates for me to get in. We stare at each other for a minute, then I sigh and climb in, knowing I’m never going to win.

He climbs in and starts the engine, giving me a sideways glance as he pulls out of the back car park and heads in the direction of my apartment.

Ten minutes in and I can’t wait any longer… “Erm, Killian…”

He briefly glances at me then back to the road. “Yeah?”

“How do you know where to go?”

I watch him smile a little and wonder if he’s going to tell me when he suddenly sighs then speaks.
