“Okay then, go by yourself, whatever,” I mutter and Sonnet chuckles beside me.

We watch as Calvin stops shoveling and leans on his shovel the instant he sees Cassia striding his way.

“He’s observant when it comes to her,” Sonnet whispers.

I don’t reply because it’s way too funny to watch these two. Whatever Cassia is telling him, it’s received with resistance because he’s giving her a curt shake of his head.

“Oh, shit,” Sonnet mutters and she’s about to jump over the fence when Cassia places her hands on her hips.

I hold Sonnet in place. “Don’t you dare. Let her flip out on him and see what he does. Ivar and Perry are right there with them, it’s not like they are going to rip each other’s head off.”

“No, but you know how Cassia gets when she puts her…fuck.”

The sheriff’s hand flies out and he has his fingers wrapped around her throat. I’m about to spring into action but one look at Perry has me grabbing Sonnet to keep her in place. Perry holds his hand palm up as a signal to stop me and now that I’m taking a second look, I understand what he’s trying to tell me.

“I’ll be damned,” I mutter when Cassia submittingly nods and the sheriff releases his grip, allowing Cassia to storm away, her face completely flushed.

She completely ignores us and heads for the little boy. Squatting down she murmurs something and his whole face fills with utter joy. Dashing up, he throws his arms around her neck and hugs her tight.

I can tell she’s shocked by the boy’s reaction because it takes her a moment or two to catch up before she hugs him back. They smile at one another as she pulls away and holds out her hand, which he greedily takes.

“Hudsyn texted me to see if I’m available to help out with the Longhorns. Zoanne and a couple of others are down with the flu as of yesterday,” Sonnet suddenly quips. “Good thing you’re at a safe distance with all the puking going on, huh?”

“Ah, no wonder Cassia came with you to drop off Dover’s ownership papers.” I grin.

Perry has been riding Dover for the last couple of days and those two are really a great fit. It’s why I’ve asked to bring by the papers since Perry still wanted to buy him, even after I mentioned I would be glad to gift him with everything he’s done for me.

Sonnet chuckles and we say our goodbyes as she heads for her bike. She rides off and Melody doesn’t even twitch at the sound of the roaring bike. We have the advantage of our livestock being used to bikes.

Our fathers herded cattle with their bikes combined with horses and we’ve been keeping the tradition alive. It’s the best of both worlds in my opinion and it pays off to have the horses unafraid of loud noise.

Though, Cassia’s Shire is the epitome of calmness. It’s exactly what the little boy is enjoying when Cassia guides her horse around the pasture. The smile on his face is lighting up the sky.

“She’s good with kids,” a voice rumbles from my left.

“As long as they’re not sticky,” I shoot back.

I get a grin from the sheriff. “She’s really obsessive about having everything clean and neat.”

Remembering what we just discussed and the fact Calvin is putting his sheriff’s shirt back on, I can’t help but rat her out when I tell him, “She didn’t mind ogling your sweaty body a moment ago. Nothing clean and neat about those dirty thoughts that were obviously going through her head.”

I should stick with my club sister but I happen to think those two need a little nudge in the right direction. They might seem to go head-to-head but the two of them are fire waiting to happen. I don’t mind throwing a little hot grease on the fire–so to say–to get things going since they clearly want one another.

“So I noticed,” Calvin mutters, his stare still locked on his son feeling on the top of the world riding Melody.

He’s about to add some more words but his phone starts to ring. The second he answers is when his face turns to stone. He grunts about heading right over and tucks the phone away.

“What’s going on?” I question.

Calvin mutters a curse. “Sonnet, how long ago did she leave?”

Dread fills me. “I don’t know…a handful of minutes ago, why?”

“I just received a call about a motorcycle being run off the road. EMTs are on their way. I don’t have all the details.” He takes off his Stetson and runs a hand through his hair. “Is it okay if I leave my boy here while I head out?”

I want to say no and jump on my bike to check if the biker in question is indeed Sonnet or one of my other sisters but I know he has a job to do. “Only if you keep us up to date.”

“Sure thing,” he grunts and rushes off to his patrol car.
