CHAPTERTWENTY-SEVEN

“Must I repeat meself?”

The men did not move still. Jonan reached for his sheath, and theyfollowed suit, reaching for their blades and shields.

"There shall be no bloodshed on these grounds." A voice was heard.

The guards returned their gaze to the small man who had come to join them.

“Welcome, Lord McKay. Lord Turner was not expectingyou, but he allows your audience—" the man turned around so Jonan could follow "—"please come with me."

Moments later, they arrived at the front door of the manor, and Jonan dismounted his horse. As he walked through the house, he could feelthe Scottish servants' stares. Their eyes were sad, and their spiritscrushed.

Jonan was startled to see the small man grab a ceramic vase and throw it in the direction of the servants with a quick motion.

"Get back to work!" he yelled.

All but one woman's eyes lingered on Jonan as he watched his countrymen flee. She knew something but was afraid to tell him.

Jonan was led into Lord Turner's study, whosat with a lit pipe between his lips. He looked at Jonan indifferently and puffed smoke into the air.

"Lord Turner, I present Lord McKay," said the small man.

“Thank you, Henry. You may leave us,” turning to Jonan he asked “What may I do you for today, Lord McKay?”

“I come here with the assumption that ye daenae ken that yer daughters switched themselves. The girl I married wasNora,” Jonan started.

Lord Turner sighed and stood up.

"You rode all the way here, abandoning your people, just to tell me you married the wrong daughter. I've given them to their husbands, and I don't care anymore."

"That is naethe only reason I traveled—"

"Lord McKay," Lord Turner interjected. “They are twins. You'd be unable to tell the difference. Most men would not be as concerned about their luck as you are."

Jonan felt his fists clench even harder — the man really did not care for his daughters.

"Lord Bennett has captured yer daughter, Amelia, and demands that Nora be given to him." Lord Turner remained unmoved. “He is a dangerous man, and he will hurt them.”

"I cannot assist you in your fight against an Englishman," Lord Turner said as he approached his desk. "Our agreement was to protect your clan while also sharing information. I owe neither you nor those girls anything. I've already given you enough."

"From what I've heard, ye didnae do much for a father," Jonan remarked.

“What did you just say to me?” the man said firmly.

“Ye heard what I said. Comin' here to seek yer help was a waste of time," Jonan said before turning away.

“Hen—”

Jonan interrupted him before he could finish pronouncing the name of his butler. “I shall find me way out.”

Jonan burst through the door and returned the way he came.

“I am sorry you did not get what you came here looking for,” Henry said, smiling broadly.

"Yer lord thought himself too busy to answer mequestions," Jonan tried, "but said his trusty butler, Henry, ken all that he ken." Hearing his master's false praises, the little man's eyes twinkled.

"Yes, my master tells me everything I need to know," Henry replied proudly.
