CHAPTERTWENTY-EIGHT

That morning, Nora awoke in a different room.

It took her some time to recall where she was. She had played there as a child on the few occasions when her father had taken her and her sister to the strange house.

It was Lord Bennett’s late mother’s room.

She stood up and walked to the door. When she pulled the handle, she discovered that it was, predictably, locked.

I am a prisoner. That much was clear.

Despite the fact thatreality had dampened her spirits, she tried to find solace in the fact that Amelia had been allowed to leave. She could still hear her sister's screams.

Amelia had cried and tried to persuade Bennett to let Amelia stay with her.

"Then I shallnot leave," Amelia threatened before the dogs attacked her.

It is me he wants.

She had tried to save Amelia from Jonan when she should have worried about the young Lord Bennett.

"You must be exhausted." I shall leave you to get some rest,” he had said to her before locking her in the night before.

Nora got out of the big bed and walked over to the window. It was still early in the morning, so she knew she had some time to herself before her captor arrived.

The manor's surroundings were unlike those of the keep. It had the feel of a fortress rather than a home.

But this will now be my home. She sighed, knowingno one would come to heraid.

Even though Amelia had been set free, there were only two people she could turn to for assistance: their father, who didn't care about them, and Jonan.

Jonan… Her eyes pricked at the thought of him. She had tried her hardest not to think about her handsome and kind Highlander, but she was certain he would despise her.

I lied to him and abandoned him because I lacked the courage to confront him.

"I was a coward," she mumbled to the brisk morning breeze, hoping it would carry her words to him.

This is my punishment. Then, she heard the keys clanging outside her door.

Nora rushed to the bed and sat down before her captor entered the room — he wasshirtless.

“I hope you slept well. Mother always said the air in this room waspeaceful at night, like the moon herself soothing you to sleep," he said as he approached a painting of hers on the wall.

When he returned to her, his face was sculpted in a wicked smile, gloating over her capture. He loomed over her like a predator, and she was his prey.

"Your mother wasa wise woman," Nora replied, hoping to calm the wildness he was exuding.

"Yes," he agreed, his smile belying his nature.

"You think she'd approve of what you've been doing, the cruel man you've grown into?"

He grinned. "I always preferred you because of your fiery spirit. Amelia so frail and meek, but you... you are different, Nora."

His gaze remained fixed on her, from her head to her toes, making her feel uneasy. "That is why I am willing to forgive you and your sister for what you did."

“I do not need your forgiveness. If given the opportunity again, I would not marry you," Nora replied.

“It matters not. You are supposed to be my wife,” he continued.
