"But I am not, and I never will be."

"It might not be up to you, my dear Nora," he slyly suggested.

"I shall have you separated from that bruteand you will assist me."

“I will never!”

“You will tell everyone that he beats you. If you don't tell people what I want, I'll mark you myself."

Nora suddenly burst out laughing. Bennett's smile faded.

“What makes you laugh so?”

"You no longer have Amelia. You cannot make me do anything I do not wish to do,” she stated.

"Then I shallkeep you here forever," he said as he approached her and took a seat in front of her.

"You will be my prisoner until you agree to divorce the Scottish filth," he said as he approached the door. “And I will have you know that I do not feed prisoners.”

“I am no one’s prisoner,” she muttered under her breath.

He abruptly stopped and returned his attention to her.

"You are in my house, and you are what I say your are," Bennett said as he approached her. Nora hurried across the bed, but he rushed forward to catch her ankle.

“Let go of me!” Nora screamed, but her anguish only made himgrin.

“We are children no more. Neither you nor Amelia can fight me," Bennett laughed.

Nora shrieked in rage at the mention of her sister's name.

Shekicked her legs hard, determined to hurt him. She eventuallywas able to free a foot and strike him hard in the chest.

The lord rolled off the bed and landed on his head. Nora jumped outand ran to the farthest corner of the room, grabbing a candlestick.

He got to his feet, brushing off the kick on his chest as if it hadn't happened.

"I don't need to lay hands on you to break you, Nora," he smiled.

“I shall return to speak to you later," he stated and left.

I will not give in. Buta sliver of fear crept into her mind.

It was only her first day as a prisoner.

Bennett had promised to keep her for the rest of his life.
