CHAPTERTWENTY-NINE

Jonan sat next to the fire, listening to Nora's sister speak.

“I blame myself for everything. If I was stronger, Nora wouldn't have to do as much to protect me," Amelia said, staring at her trembling hands.

“It’s alright,” Jonan assured her.

"How do you know?"

"Because I lived with yer sister for a while. She protects everyone she cares about. Nora sees nae one as weak, and I am certain that she does nae see ye are weak either. She loves ye.”

“But I cannot protect her. I tried. "

“He did not find out immediately. I tried to be like Nora," she continued,"I tried to speak up more and be more assertive. Even though I did not put up a good act, he did not see through it until he tried to force himself on me… and he did not see Nora’s scar. She'd had one when we were kids. She—”

“She told me,” Jonan answered with a heavy heart.

“I wish I had seen her or written her, but I did not want her to worry.” Amelia burst into tears.

“I promise that I will find yer sister and ye will see her again,” Jonan assured her before getting up to his feet.

“Come,” he said to her. “We should find an inn. Ye should nae sleep out here. It is dangerous.”

He offered his hand.

"I remember walking past an inn a short distance down the path," Amelia said when she was finally able to speak. And so theywalkedalong the road until they arrived.

“We shall leave at first light,” he told her. “Get some rest.”

The next morning, both Jonan and Amelia were awakened by a loud knock on the door. The girl's eyes widened, terrified that it was Lord Bennett.

Jonan grabbed his sword and rose to his feet.

“Who is there?” Jonan asked.

“Ah. I am happy I found ye,” said Callan.

"Ye didnae make it easy to catch up to ye," Callan sighed as he entered the room.

His brow furrowed as his gaze met Amelia's.

"She's her sister, Amelia," Jonan explained.

“It is a pleasure to meet ye, Amelia,” Callan said as he offered his hand to her.

Amelia shook Callan’s hand. They both stood there, looking at each other,Callan obviously distracted byher.

He is smitten

“We should be on our way soon,” Jonan reminded them, breaking the silence.

“Aye,” Callan answered sharply as though waking from a dream. “We must hurry.”

Jonan led the way, with Callan and Amelia close behind. When he arrived at the horses, he noticed a sack atop Callan's horse.

"How did yetwo meet?" Callan asked.

"Fate," Jonan speculated. “She was fleein’ from the English Lord. When Nora surrendered herself to him, sohe let her go."
