"No," I finally said. "I should be, though. Right?"

He cocked his head, looking me over with his big, dark eyes.

Sirens were known to be terrifying creatures that shape-shifted and hunted mortals, eating their flesh and drinking their blood. I always assumed they were more myth than fact, but here one sat, the blood of his last victim washing away with the current, and for some reason, I felt the need to lean into his inviting smile.

"What areyou?" he asked.

"I'm a were. An Omega were."

"Ah!" he gasped. "A gentle wolf! I've never met one of you before." He crawled out of the water toward me, stopping right at my feet. I stiffened but didn't move away. "You can't turn into a puppy, can you?"

I shook my head. He was cute.

"That just seems unfair," he pouted. "I have always wanted to meet one of you, though. And I have to tell you," he leaned in, all energy and excitement. "I have met, and fucked, many of your Alphas, and while they are delicious and decent in bed, for the most part, they are complete fucking idiots. Well...maybe not all of them. No," he held out his hands, pretending to think. "All of them," he nodded as if coming to a firm decision. "I do not understand how you can stand such fools," he laughed.

I let out a quick puff of a laugh. I still wasn't sure if I should run or just sit and chat, cultivating a strange, new friendship. The pull to be near him was just so consuming.

"Don't sirens live in the ocean?" I asked.

"Only the fat ones," he smirked. "Singing to lure in whole boatloads of men so they can gorge themselves for days. So lazy. So boring. And you never know what you'll get with sailors. Werewolves, vampires, elves, trolls, which are just fucking disgusting. And heaven forbid you get stuck with a boat full of humans," he shuddered, the last word oozing out of his mouth. "So gross."

I couldn't help but laugh. I might end up dead by this siren’s hands before sunrise, but at least I could allow myself to enjoy his company for now. It was scary being outside my village, and, for now, it felt good to be near someone so…sweet?

"No, I don't care for the sea." He leaned against the fat roots of the tree, getting comfortable. "I don't like dark waters. I need to be able to see what's in it. How about you, little wolf? Why are you roaming around the forest all by yourself?"

"I need to go to Vaesen. Can you tell me if I'm going in the right direction?"

"Vaesen? What awaits you in Vaesen?"

"I'm going to kill the Alpha that murdered my mate. I'm going to cut him open and watch him die by my hands, and I would greatly appreciate your help if you wouldn't mind."

My confident words caught me off guard just as much as my new friend.

"You are very surprising, little wolf," he smiled. "My name is Lex, and I would very much love to help you. I need a little adventure. These woods have started to bore me. There's just nothing exciting left for me here."

He smiled brightly, his teeth no longer sharp but smooth and white, like mine. His sweet face made me want to hug him, pull him close, and snuggle.

"Have you put a spell on me?" I asked, feeling calmer with each passing moment.

"You seemed tired and a little upset," he whispered, leaning closer to rest his head on my shoulder. "Would you like me to stop?"

"Please."

I was too light and soft, like I could cuddle into the grass and sleep forever. But right now, I wanted my anger. It gave me purpose, a reason to keep living. Something I desperately needed.

Lex gently touched my arm with the tips of his fingers. The floating sensation in my head evaporated, and the heavy weight of rage, fear, and pain crashed over me, pressing me into the dirt. I slumped over from the force of it, needing a moment to collect myself.

"Lex?" I asked, my voice low and gruff.

He looked up at me with expectant eyes.

"Are you going to eat me?"

He brushed a strand of my hair out of my face, tucking it behind my ear. "Not today, little wolf."
