I raced toward Lex. He was kneeling over a body that was ripped wide open. His face was dripping with blood, the Alpha's guts tangled in his fingers. He glared, with bloody teeth, at a trembling Alpha that was trying to gather the courage to attack him. Lex stood up and casually walked to the frantic wolf. The guard angled his posture to attack, but his fear locked him in place. Lex lazily swiped his fingernails across the wolf's neck, and blood poured out like a fountain. The siren's eyes glimmered, and he moaned at the sight.

I hesitated to move, not wanting Lex to attack me accidentally. He was lost to his inner beast...assuming sirens even had one. It seemed more likely that they were pure beasts all the time. Nothing restrained within them. But before I could move, a sharp grunt and a splatter of something wet pulled my attention.

Joon's hand was buried deep into the last guard's chest. Blood gushed out around Joon's forearm as he moved around inside the wolf. The guard coughed, and blood sprayed out of his mouth, covering Joon's face and chest, then he slowly fell to the floor, dead before his head hit the ground.

"You okay?" Lex said, grabbing my shoulder. Blood streaked down his face and robes, and his arms were coated in the thick, sticky substance. The look in his eyes truly terrified me, but I nodded and took his wet hand anyway, relieved to have him standing next to me.

Joon sprinted across the room toward Byriel and Hida.

Hida's fists looked bloody and raw as he pummeled at Byriel's face and chest. Joon launched himself at Hida's body, knocking both of them onto the stone floor. Joon immediately struck Hida in the ribs, pinning him in place.

Byriel stood and swayed, his feet unsteady. I was worried he might keel over, but he wasn't my main focus at the moment. Joon was. And right now, my Alpha was tearing at every piece of Hida's flesh that he could reach. Hida continued to fight back, ripping at his arms and face with his claws, not willing to go down easy.

Then it all happened as if in slow motion.

Hida reached down to his belt and pulled out his dagger, similar to the one I still held tightly in my hand. He reared the blade back and plunged it into Joon's chest before any of us realized what was happening.

Joon leaned back and examined the blade sticking out of him. The shock on his face had to mirror my own. He gripped the handle and slowly pulled it out, blood flowing freely down his already blood-splattered chest.

Hida shoved Joon off of him and dug his knee hard into his stomach, straddling his body.

"I am the wrath of the King!" he roared, his eyes wild and feral as he bared his teeth. "You cannot kill me!"

I tightened my grip on the dagger and flew toward them.

Hida grabbed Joon by the hair.

Pulled his limp body off the ground.

Opened his mouth wide.

And prepared to sink his teeth into my Alpha.

I slammed into Hida's back, brought my dagger around, and sliced clean through his throat. I moved the blade back into him quickly, sawing and tearing, desperate to feel his last breath. The dagger dragged and tugged as it tore through flesh and muscle. It slipped a bit from my hand as his slick blood poured over and down his body. Hida let out a strangled cough, spitting out a fine mist of red into the air, then he went limp, falling right onto Joon's chest.

I kicked and heaved at the dead body, shoving him off my Alpha.

Joon's unconscious form stole my breath, and I froze. My head pulsed with a familiar all-consuming pain, the kind felt when you lose a mate.

"Nooo!" I cried, my voice shaky and broken. "You can't die! You're mine. Death doesn't get to take you. You belong to me." Hot tears poured down my face as I brought shaky hands up to his cheeks. A soft cough left his lips, and I gasped, turning to find Lex.

"He's alive," I whispered. "What do I do?"

The whole situation was too familiar. The pain, the blood, the panic.

"We leave before they find us," Byriel said, walking as quickly as his battered body would allow. He grabbed the medallion off the floor and flung it around his neck, tucking it securely in the front of his shirt. "Follow me," he said, struggling to heave Joon onto his shoulder.

Byriel shifted into his wolf. His heavy paws thumped across the blood-soaked stone toward the passageway.

The last time I saw that large, black wolf, he was disappearing into the woods after murdering my mate. Now, here he was, disappearing down a passageway, trying to save my Alpha.

The swift wavesrocked our small boat, making it feel as if we could be flung overboard at any moment. Byriel rowed at a steady pace, moving us through the rough, dark water.

I cradled Joon's head in my lap. The Alpha was still out cold, and I was too terrified to think what might happen if he didn't wake soon.

"Will he be okay?" Lex whispered to me, an arm wrapped loosely around my middle. He held me the best he could in the small vessel.

Too scared to answer, I simply looked down and brushed my fingers through Joon's black, shaggy hair and down the sides of his face. He looked so frail. It broke my heart.
