"Byriel?" I said.

The Alpha looked slightly over his shoulder, still concentrating on rowing through the choppy water.

"How did you find the marked wolves?" I needed something to take my mind off Joon's labored breathing.

He paused, thinking, before pulling the oars up to rest for a moment.

"It hasn't been that hard," he said softly. "We ask around the villages and neighboring towns about the mark. There's always someone that points us in the right direction, whether it be because they just want to be helpful or they hold a grudge. Enemies are always willing to share too much information." He rubbed at one of his shoulders, stretching his arms out. "We werewolves like to show off our scars too much. Others tend to remember marks that stand out on someone's skin like that. But it's as if this last wolf doesn't exist. Maybe the prophecy was wrong, and there were only seven."

I unsheathed my dagger, trying to think everything through. Hida's blood still covered the blade. I dipped it into the water, watching the dark waves wash it clean before bringing it up to my face to examine the shiny metal in the moonlight.

"So the wolf you're looking for carries a mark in a place no one has ever seen, has no grudges, and no enemies?"

"Yes. What kind of wolf lives a life like that?"

"Omegas," I said simply.

"So our fate rests in the hands of an Omega?" Byriel snorted.

I sheathed my dagger. "Doesn't it already?"
