Pain pounded within my skull, and I was suddenly dizzy and sick, my brain disconnected from my body. I could still see the Alpha above me, but I couldn't feel anything. My vision domed to just Hida's twisted, angry face sneering and laughing at me.

A bloody smile split across his face, and his lips moved as if he were speaking, but no sound reached my ears. His body moved backward slightly, and I braced herself, knowing full well he was going to thrust into me. When, suddenly, he disappeared.

Confused, I slowly sat up, my body swayed, and nausea swam in my stomach. I looked behind me. The black wolf, Byriel, was straddling Hida and slamming his fist repeatedly into the Alpha's face.

Byriel jerked his head up by his hair and roared long and hard. "I think she's suffered enough, don't you?" he roared.

My senses slowly returned, and my mind cleared a bit. "Korban!" I crawled toward his body.

He was alive. Please be alive. You have to be alive!

My mate laid at an awkward angle against the ground, his feet slightly tucked beneath him, completely motionless on his back.

"Kor, Korban?" My voice cracked when he didn't move.

I ran a shaky hand over the large gash along his stomach as I settled next to his head. His throat was torn wide open. Blood pulsed and seeped over his neck and chest, dripping onto the ground. I could see the muscles in his throat move and jerk as he tried swallowing and speaking, air bubbling out and covering his skin with frothy blood. His wide, frightened eyes darted all around, not seeming to focus on anything.

"It's okay," I whispered, struggling to see through my tears. "It's okay. It's okay." It was the only thing I could think to say. I hovered a shaking hand over the wound, not sure what to do. I wanted to press on it, but it was so massive.Would it even matter?

The blood gushing out of his body slowly lessened and then stopped. His labored breath rattled before his face relaxed, and his eyes became dull and unfocused.

"No, no, no, no, no," I sobbed. "Please, no!" I flung myself over his chest, blood smearing over my face and arms.

"Where the fuck is Heath?" someone asked.

"Fuck."

"Let's go. That's an order." There was a pause. "Leave her."

I pushed myself away from Korban's body and watched the Alphas retreat into the forest. Rage stole all my fear, and I jumped up, running at full speed toward them. I barreled straight for the nearest wolf and shoved Hida as hard as I could. He barely moved.

He turned, laughing as I launched myself at him again, driving my whole body into his. I bounced off and fell hard onto the ground. Again, he didn't move.

Hida laughed as I pulled myself up. He took a few steps toward me and slapped me once across the face, flinging me back into the dirt.

"Stupid, fucking Omega," he laughed, walking off into the trees.

I pushed myself off the ground and began to chase the three as they shifted into their werewolves. I reached the edge of the trees but fell to my knees as a deep, sharp pain lanced my body, radiating from my mating bite. My heart seized in my chest, and I suddenly couldn't breathe. My veins were on fire, and my vision blurred, going fuzzy around the edges.

I clutched my chest, gasping for air.

Then everything went black.

The Edge Of The Meadow

Tzidal

It was almostdawn when I finally opened my eyes. The sky beyond the trees was just turning a soft blue, bleeding into pink and orange as the sun rose. My face was pressed firmly into the grass, and I was cold from being exposed to the night air. I moved my arms and pushed myself up, finding the simple movement made my muscles ache and stomach tense.

A dull ache radiated from my mating bite, and I pressed my hand to it, wincing. The flesh was tender and raw even though I had no actual wound.

Scanning the dark forest in front of me, I squinted into the distance. It was quiet. No footsteps. No voices. Just the wind rustling the leaves.

I looked around the meadow, and my eyes fell to Korban's lifeless body. I had hoped it had been a dream.

I forced my feet forward, my heart constricting with fresh pain. It was like walking through mud, my body fighting every step. I knelt next to my mate's face and cupped his cheek. He was cold, and his skin felt...off. Leaning down, I tried to scent him but only the smell of death hung in the air. I closed my eyes to feel him through our mating bond but felt nothing.

He was gone.
