Page 34 of The Blue Path

Blue had mentioned a few times that his village didn't want or like him, and I just couldn't understand why. He was so sweet.

Blue's voice dropped to a hushed whisper as he twisted his fingers in his hair. "Why did those wolves hurt my pack?"

Lex and I exchanged a look, both our smiles falling.

I struggled for a moment, not wanting to talk about the prophecy or any of the awful things that led me so far from home. I was sick of my rage and grief and crossed my arms, wishing Joon was here to hold me.

"I think they were looking for someone," I said.

"Why did they force me to take off my shirt?" His big eyes were filled with fear as he spoke, but he kept it in control, speaking clear and soft.

"The wolf they're looking for has a mark. A red mark on their skin."

"Oh." He blinked in confusion, thinking it over for a moment. "How do you know that?"

I took a deep breath and reluctantly fell into the awful story. I told him about my mate, Korban, and Joon's mate, Fennah, and their awful deaths. I talked about how we found each other and tracked down the wolves in Stone City, then Vaesen.

It felt unfair not to tell him everything considering the horrors he saw inflicted on his pack. So I told him everything. Except for one thing.

Byriel.

I couldn't bring myself to tell him about the dark wolf.

Lex's eyes moved to me when I only mentioned finding Byriel injured by the river, but the siren didn't speak up, so I skimmed over the alpha's hand in all of it.

I didn't know why I kept it a secret. Maybe I didn't want Blue terrified of the alpha; we were traveling together, and it could make things worse. Plus, I knew Byriel wouldn't hurt us. The alpha was a lot of things and had a lot left to sacrifice to appease the Moon, but he wasn't the monster I first thought. He was just another victim of his father, broken like the rest of us.

Blue sat with all the information, nodding softly and thinking it over. His presence was so calm, and I hated that the alphas had worked him up so easily. He was an anxious mess around them, but in reality, everything about the omega was soothing. Even when his eyes glazed over as he talked about his pack, his presence was gentle and his voice tender. It made my heart ease rather than burn with his pain.

I could only assume the attack on Blue's pack was happening all over Havre—innocent wolves being terrorized just to find one birthmark. It was unthinkable and evil, and there was no way it was going to work. After all, when looking for a needle in a haystack, the answer isn't to burn down the barn.

Blue tipped his head up, looking at the sky, and let out a gentle hum. "Do you know the mourning song of the Silver Moon?"

I smiled and nodded. "It's had been a long time since I heard it, but I do know it."

"What is it?" Lex asked.

"It's a very old song." I threaded my arm through Blue's, snuggling in. He traced the twisting purple mark on my arm with his fingertips. It tickled. "My grandmother sang it at every burial service we went to, but I don't think it's common anymore."

"Do you remember it?" Blue asked, his eyes wide with hope.

I smiled and hummed. Our voices blended together as we sang the melody I hadn't heard in so long.

The blue path to the silver Moon,

wrapped in love and light

Death to greet the weary wolf,

raging war with all his might

Hold them close and kiss their eyes,

a warrior's time to go

Feel his pride and keep his love,

giving strength to those below
