The song ended, and I closed my eyes, feeling the love of those I once knew fill my chest. Blue was a gift of the Moon. His sweet presence and loving manner healed something deep within me that I hadn't realized was still in pain.

I truly felt peace for the first time since leaving home. I just wished my mate was here to share it with me.

“That was lovely.”Byriel’s voice cut through the silence.

The three of us spun to see the alpha standing at the edge of our camp. His jaw was tight, and his eyes narrowed. He looked…off. Then his expression quickly changed, and he forced a small smile. It looked uncomfortable, but I couldn’t remember ever seeing him smile. Perhaps that was just how he looked.

My eyes fell down his form, taking in his rigid stance. He was breathing hard, covered in sweat, and blood trickled down his chin and chest. A fierce punga bear lay at his feet. Pungas were smaller than most of their kind but feral and fast. It was a very impressive kill.

“Byriel,” I said in awe, my mouth watering as I moved closer. “How did you manage him by yourself?”

It usually took two, if not three, alphas to maneuver such a kill.

“I wanted to make sure everyone got their fill,” Byriel said, but his eyes were squarely on Blue. The alpha was showing off, and I was thankful. It had been a while since we had such a splendid meal.

Blue shied away from the alpha’s intense stare, mumbling a quick thanks.

“You outdid yourself,” Joon said to Byriel, stepping up behind me and wrapping an arm around my waist. I hadn’t heard him arrive. “I was pissed I hadn’t found anything decent, but I guess we’ll be eating well tonight after all.”

Byriel nodded at the compliment, his usual stoic expression firmly in place, but his eyes sparkled every time he looked at Blue. I wanted to smile, but something deep inside made me feel uneasy about the idea of Byriel claiming him. Perhaps it was my prejudice against the alpha or the fact that I felt responsible for Blue, but I couldn’t shake it.

We ate up, both my stomach and wolf very happy. The only thing that could make me happier was my alpha.

I stared at Joon longingly, wishing nothing more than to spend the night pinned beneath his powerful body. Everything in me ached with need, and now that my hunger was sated, my wolf’s needs were flaring hard.

Joon added a few more logs to the fire, then turned to Lex. “Are you hunting tonight or staying here?”

“No hunting,” he said, snuggling Blue. The omega looked sleepy. “I ate well last night. Why?”

Joon’s eyes fell to mine. His expression held so much heat my breath hitched, and my heart fluttered.

“I need my mate,” he said.

“Wait. What?” Lex squealed, sitting up. “Mate?”

Lex jumped up and grabbed me around the middle, pulling me into a crushing hug.

“Oh, my stars! I can’t believe you didn’t tell me!” he gushed, squeezing me especially tight. Then just as quickly, he released me and turned on Joon with a stern tone. “You know, it’s about damn time. If you took any longer, I was going to mate her myself.”

“I thought you were already mated?” Byriel said, glancing between us.

“No,” I blushed, watching Lex bounce giddily on his toes. It made Blue laugh.

Byriel arched his brow in surprise. “This whole time, she hasn’t been your mate? Why on earth would you allow an omega that wasn’t your mate to defy you so openly?”

I looked at Joon from under my eyelashes, giving him a playful smile. I bit my bottom lip, and his eyes flashed red.

“Just you wait,” Joon said to Byriel, keeping his eyes on my mouth. “You’ll be amazed at the defiance your wolf will crave.”

Byriel shook his head. “No sensible alpha craves defiance.”

Joon snatched me up, flinging me over his shoulder.
