It was an odd request. Joon never asked anyone to look after me when he had to leave our camp, for whatever reason. I could only assume it had to do with Blue.

"Come on," Joon said to Byriel, pulling off his pants.

Byriel's eyes repeatedly flickered from Blue to Joon, and I pressed my lips together to hide my frown. Byriel was pulling hard to the omega. I thought I saw it at the river, but now there was no denying it. A possessive alpha was dangerous, and this could quickly spiral into a very real problem—especially if Blue had no interest.

I held my breath, waiting for Byriel to refuse to leave Blue's side.

Joon rolled his shoulders, completely naked and ready to shift. He eyed Byriel, who was still staring at Blue. Thankfully, the omega was too busy collecting sticks with Lex to notice.

"Byriel?" Joon said.

The dark wolf's eyes slowly moved away from Blue to Joon. My mate tilted his head to indicate they needed to head out.

Giving Blue one more glance, Byriel cleared his throat loudly. "Right."

Byriel reached for his belt as Blue turned to him. The omega's eyes moved slowly over his tall, muscular form. Byriel pulled his waistband down, and Blue spun, turning away. The youngling stared into the distance, a nervous energy pushing off him.

Blue had been so fidgety and quiet around Byriel all day. I couldn't tell if the alpha scared him senseless or if perhaps it was just a general fascination, having never been around an Alpha before.

"I'm going to race ahead and see if there are any paths or signs of a camp nearby," Byriel said, flinging his pants over a low-hanging branch. Blue cut a peek at Byriel's naked form out of the corner of his eye, then jerked his head in the opposite direction, his hands noticeably trembling.

Both Joon and Byriel shifted quickly. They each released deep snorts and rumbling growls as they raced off in opposite directions. The wildlife around us went quiet at their booming warnings to any predators that might be eyeing us as they left. Then the forest went completely silent as the two wolves slipped between the trees.

Blue pouted, mumbling about not getting to see them shift. His fascination with the Alphas was kind of sweet. Growing up in a village full of them, I never thought of an Alphas' ability to shift as anything but ordinary.

We collected sticks and rocks, quickly building a fire. Blue watched in awe as I sparked a flame with the two pieces of flint. He laughed, saying he simply went without the warmth of a fire outside his village, or he'd find the remnants of a smoldering one and try to bring it back to life.

It was hard to believe the omega wandered so freely around these woods by himself, but he was so relaxed in the vast space I was starting to believe him.

The flames danced as the three of us settled in, watching the late evening sun dip closer to the horizon. It was going to be a lovely sunset, I could already tell.

"Where are your parents?" Lex asked, his voice cutting through the serene atmosphere.

"Lex!" I snapped, leaning forward to scold the siren with a stern look. Blue sat between us, smiling sweetly.

"It's okay," he said. "They passed away when I was young. I was sent to live with my grandmother in the hidden village, but she passed away before my coming of age." He shrugged his shoulders, wanting us to believe it didn't bother him, but I could scent his unease at talking about it.

"Are you more than just wolf?" Lex asked with a teasing lift to his voice. He snagged the purple strand in Blue's hair and gave it a playful tug. "Is there more than one creature swimming around in those interesting eyes?"

"That's very rude," I said. "You can't ask someone if they have more than one beast in them."

"It's okay." Blue laughed. His eyes were tired, but the sound was genuine. "I'm part fae. My grandmother was a fae, and while her pups were all normal wolves, I came out with bright blue hair. It's gotten really dark as I've grown," he moved his hand through it, "but that's why everyone calls me Blue. It's not my real name. But I like Blue better."

"What's your real name?" I asked.

"I'll tell you only if you promise never to repeat it." He was dead serious, and it intrigued me to no end.

I agreed, both Lex and I promising with blood if needed.

"Vihaan."

"That's a perfectly good name," I said, not understanding why he hated it.

"I think I'd go by Blue too," Lex snorted.

"Yeah," Blue laughed. "It's not great."

Lex and Blue talked about the omega's family. He smiled and laughed, occasionally looking away when too much attention was on him. It was clear he wasn't used to others being so interested in him, and I felt for the youngling.
