Page 63 of Making Time for Us

I set my phone’s alarm and crawl under the covers, the cool sheets welcome my warm skin as my body sinks into the mattress. My eyes are so heavy that I drift into dreamland without much of a thought.

When I hear heavy breathing and feel the heat radiating around me, I realize Marco is asleep next to me with his arm draped over my stomach.

With as little jostling as possible, I look back at his serene face and marvel at his peace while he sleeps. After a few seconds of staring at him, I hear the sharp intake of his breath, and his eyes slowly peel open.

“What time is it?” he rasps.

My heart drops as I reach for my phone on the nightstand thinking I overslept and left the kids stranded at school. When I see the time, I blow out a breath and say, “We still have about an hour before we need to get going.”

He lays flat on his back and stretches his limbs. “Oh man, I wasn’t asleep that long, but I needed that.”

“Same. I was dragging ass. How was court?” I roll over to face him.

“This particular one was hard to rehash. The public defender was an asshole who kept trying to trip me up. Then he was getting pissed when I called him out on it. I knew every detail of that case from memory though. I hope his asshole client gets convicted and rots in jail because the evidence is airtight. I made sure of it.”

“Geez, that’s rough. Should we egg his car tonight?”

He laughs a hearty laugh and that puts a smile on my face.

“So, what’d you do today?” he asks.

“I got all the kid’s winter clothes out, washed them, and then added them to their drawers. I took out all the ones they’ve outgrown to donate.” I sit on my elbows so I can get closer to his face. “Hey, that reminds me I forgot to tell you. I talked to the principal the day of the kids’ parties and asked if the school would partner with Oceanside Outfitters for a clothing drive and he agreed. I called Gail after and talked to her for a bit and gave her his number. She’s dropping off the donation boxes next week.”

He stares at me for a few seconds with a smirk on his face.

“What?” I ask while poking his side with my finger.

He laughs before he says, “You’re incredible, you know that? How did I get so lucky?”

“Beats me.” I shrug jokingly. “Speaking of Gail, did you ever find out who broke into all those shops?”

An unexpected flash of anger crosses his eyes and he clenches his jaw. “No. None of the shops they’ve hit had cameras and they smashed everything in sight before they left, so there’s not much evidence to find. They seem to be targeting local and under-secured. They’re up to five shops now.”

“Oh man, that’s frustrating.” I nod in sympathy.

“Tell me about it,” he says, jaw still tight.

“I’m sorry, love. We don’t have to talk about it.” I lean up and kiss him on the cheek. “I will make it up to you tonight on our date. I have a little surprise for you.” I wiggle my eyebrows.

“Oh yeah?” He pulls me into him and squeezes me tight.

“Yeah.”

“Tell me now. Better yet, show me now.” He licks his lips and my insides clench.

Before I have a chance to respond, he kisses my neck, making me squirm under him in a fit of giggles.

I poke him in the ribs and shout between my laughter, “You have to be good if you want your surprise!”

He loosens his grip on me with a pouty face. "Fine, I’ll be good.” He unravels us and starts to sit up. “I’m starving. I’m going to make a sandwich before we get the kids. Want one?”

“Nah, I’m good. Thanks.”

We both hop out of bed, and he walks out of our bedroom. I head to my drawer for a new pair of socks and the red satin I bought a few days ago pops out at me from where I hide it. My pulse picks up at the thought of it.

Oh, man.

The nerves dancing around in my belly are making me queasy, so I grab my socks quickly and push the drawer closed with a little too much force.
