“Yeah, unlike me.” She blew out a sigh as she blinked rapidly.

I realized she was trying to hold back tears and the urge to go to her and pull her into my arms was overwhelming. I hated to see her in pain. Especially since I knew there wasn’t actually anything I could do about it.

“I wish you’d stop blaming yourself for what happened,” I told her.

“And I wish you’d stop acting like you know what I’m going through,” she snarled as a tear slipped down her cheek.

“Maybe if you’d fucking talk me, I would know!” I yelled.

Celia flinched so hard she knocked her book to the floor where it hit with a heavy thud. Her arms wrapped around herself as her eyes clenched shut and more tears trailed down her cheek.

“I’m sorry,” she said quickly, her body rocking gently. “I’m sorry.”

“Celia,” I felt my stomach flip and for a second I thought I really would throw up. She was terrified and it was my fault. After what she’d told me about her father, I should have known better than to scream at her like that. “No, sweetie, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled at you.”

“It’s okay,” she said, opening her eyes as she clearly forced herself to relax again. “Siblings fight, right?”

I walked slowly toward her and sat next to her on the bed. I didn’t want to move too quickly and scare her again, but I absolutely couldn’t walk out and leave her like that.

“We are not siblings,” I whispered, reaching up slowly to cup her cheek in my palm. I was afraid she’d flinch away from my touch, but she leaned into it as her tongue slid over lower lip and she met my gaze.

“What are we then?” she asked.

I moved my thumb to wipe away the moisture lingering on her cheek as I lowered my face toward her.

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “Friends who kiss sometimes?”

She giggled as her eyelids fluttered closed and her hand came up to cover mine.

“Can I kiss you again?” I asked.

Celia nodded as she leaned toward me, and I closed the distance quickly. This kiss was not gentle as our first one had been. We both had emotions roiling through us that called for something deeper, more desperate, almost angry.

Our mouths crashed together, tongues sliding against one another as our teeth clacked together. She released my hand as she pressed closer to me, her arms winding around my neck as she pulled me down to the mattress over her.

My fingers skimmed up her sides under her shirt, her skin so soft and smooth beneath my touch. I was rock hard and realized that I wanted Celia to be my first, to be my always. We might not be soul mates pushed together by Fate, but she was mine.

And I was hers.

“Celia, honey?” Carol called from the stairs. “Are you ready to go?”

We jumped apart at the sound of her mom’s footsteps coming closer down the hall. Celia stood and straightened her clothes as I walked to look out the window, facing my body toward the wall to hide my very obvious arousal.

God, what the hell were we doing?

“Yeah, Mom,” Celia answered as Carol walked in the room. “Ready when you are.”

“Trevor, are you still coming with us tonight?” Carol asked. Her tone sounded amused, but maybe that was my guilt playing tricks on me. There was no way she could know what had just happened.

“Yes, ma’am,” I agreed.

“We’ll be down in a minute,” Celia said.

“Hurry up, you don’t want to be late for Astrid,” Carol reminded her before turning and walking out, leaving Celia and me alone again.

“What are we doing?” Celia stage whispered as she shut her door and leaned against it.

“I don’t know,” I admitted, stalking over to her and wrapping my arms around her waist. “But I lied earlier. There was nothing brotherly about that kiss at the hospital.”
